After several months away, wrestling returns to Northeastern Iowa in July as the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame prepares for another year of inductions. Impact Pro Wrestling out of Algona will again put on a wrestling event for the Friday night of the event and have now released part of the card for that event.
While two events between now and the Hall of Fame show, the IPW Heavyweight championship currently held by James Jefferies may be held by someone else at bell time. But the title will be contested at the show with the Hall of Famers (and other wrestling legends) serving as lumberjacks. Inductees Cowboy Bill Watts, Adam “Edge” Copeland, Jim Brunzell, Matt Hughes and George Napalitano are expected to be in attendance as are Gerald Brisco, Jim Ross, Danny Hodge, Baron Von Raschke, Mad Dog Vachon, Larry Hennig, Bob Roop and Dan Gable.
Also on the card, local standouts Nicky Free and Ricky Love will do battle. Tag Team champions AJ Smooth and Ryan Slade will defend against James Jeffries (making his continued championship reign unlikely) and former WWE, WCW and ECW wrestler Perry Saturn. Saturn has lived in Northwest Iowa and Minnesota for most of the past decade and is quickly becoming a true talent and help to many great Iowa promotions.
Colt Cabana makes his second appearance at the Hall of Fame. This year, “Classic” Colt takes on Matty Star, a solid Iowa-based worker.
And IPW wraps up their announced matches with their annual Lou Thesz Cup Battle Royal which in previous years has featured tons of Iowa wrestling stars and a few living legends all battling for the trophy.
Referee Billy J will officiate all the matches at the show. He told this Examiner, “I’m so excited that this is going to be another awesome Hall of Fame weekend in Waterloo, Iowa. This weekend is like our Wrestlemania weekend, for a lot of indy pro wrestlers.” And like all great wrestlers, he didn’t shun away from a chance at promoting. “There are many great opportunities to meet and greet the pro wrestling legends. If you are a fan of professional wrestling, then you need to be in downtown Waterloo, Iowa for the weekend of July 12-13, 2013!”
More matches are likely to be added at or before the event. The Cedar Rapids Pro Wrestling Examiner will keep local fans abreast of any additions or changes to the card as they are announced.
