The real estate blog Movoto.com recently ranked Atlanta as the 8th most exciting city in America. When you sit and think about all the cities in America and then concentrate on Atlanta, this sounds about right, but it might surprise you to see some of the cities ranked ahead of Atlanta.
Movoto.com is a very interesting site and they are really taking the lead in ranking U.S. cities on all sorts of issues and topics.
I talked with the writer of this article, David Cross of Movoto about their site and where the idea came from to do these city rankings.
“It kind of started on a whim,” admitted Cross. “We had an idea to make a list about the places that weren’t very hip and it just grew from there.”
Movoto has received a lot of international publicity recently for these lists, some more controversial that others. One list that I covered a few weeks back listed the nerdiest cities in America.
Cross says a lot of thought and research goes into these pieces as they look at the 50 most populous cities across the country. Cross also added that in the future they will be looking at the 100 most populous cities when putting these articles together.
Ok, back to this list of the most exciting cities in America.
The criteria for these lists changes with each topic, so here’s what was considered for exciting cities.
Park acreage per person
Percent of population between 20 and 34 years old
Fast food restaurants per square mile (the fewer the better)
Bars per square mile
Big box stores per square mile (the fewer the better)
Movie theaters per square mile
Museums per square mile
Theater companies per square mile
Music venues per square mile
No sports were taken into consideration and also no consideration of tourist attractions.
Here is the ranking of the top 10 exciting cities by Movoto.com in order:
San Francisco, CA
New York, NY
“Atlanta ranks high because of it’s young population,” says Cross. “It ranks 7th in bars, 9th in music venues and 11th in theaters.”
In my opinion, 8th seems about right for the biggest city in the south.
Topping the list was a bit of a surprise in Oakland, and filling the 7th spot right ahead of Atlanta was another surprise in Milwaukee.
As someone who is from Wisconsin and has spend a lot of time experiencing Milwaukee, I know it’s a cool place, but I didn’t know others thought it was cool as well.
“I was very surprised to see Milwaukee ranking that high,” said Cross. “But Milwaukee is a solid all-around city. It doesn’t rank that high in any one category, but it’s consistent.
Cross also said he was shocked that New York wasn’t ranked number one.
“I’ve seen similar lists where New York is always in or near the top spot,” explained Cross. “So we think we have a unique list there that is accurate and fun to talk about.”
That is the ultimate goal of lists like these. We tend to click on them to see where out favorite cities rate. Movoto finds it drives traffic to their site and they say more lists are coming. One thing I would like to see change is making sure the writers have personally visited all of the cities they are talking about as Cross admitted while talking to me he has never visited Milwaukee.
I have to admit, I’m looking forward to Movoto’s next article.
