“Jack Reacher” held steady at the No. 1 spot for movies on demand from May 13 to May 19, 2013. Based on the “Jack Reacher” novels, the movie “Jack Reacher” stars Tom Cruise as the title character, a former military investigator who gets involved in the case of a mysterious sniper (played by Jai Courtney). Other stars of the movie include Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins and Werner Herzog. The movie got mixed reviews and did solid but not spectacular business at the box office when it was released in theaters.
“Safe Haven” which is based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same title, was No. 2 for the second week in a row. When a mysterious young woman (played by Julianne Hough) arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight-knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex (played by Josh Duhamel), a widowed store owner with two young children. “Safe Haven” was universally slammed by critics, but the film was a modest hit at the box office.
“Silver Linings Playbook” was No. 3 on the chart again. After he gets out of a psychiatric institution, bipolar Pat Solitano (played by Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his parents (played by Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) and tries to get back together with his ex-wife. While obsessing over how to get his ex-wife back into his life, Pat meets a complicated widow named Tiffany (played by Jennifer Lawrence), who enlists Pat to be her partner in a dance contest. “Silver Linings Playbook” received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Lawrence won Best Actress for her role in the movie. The movie got rave reviews from critics and was a big hit at the box office.
“Broken City” rose from No. 5 to No. 4. New York City private investigator Billy Taggart (played by Mark Wahlberg), who is a disgraced former cop, is kept out of jail and later hired by New York City’s popular mayor (played by Russell Crowe) to investigate the extramarital activities of the mayor’s wife (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones). Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent that the mayor is not at all what he seems, and for Billy to achieve redemption he will have to risk everything, possibly even his freedom. “Broken City” got mostly negative reviews and it flopped at the box office.
“Cloud Atlas” debuted at No. 5. This drama explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. The ensemble cast includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant and Jim Sturgess. “Cloud Atlas” got mixed reviews from critics and it was one of of the biggest box-office bombs of 2012.
