Now that he is promoting his latest film, in which he costars with father Will Smith, actor Jaden Smith is setting his sights on recording new music with sister Willow Smith, promoting his very own clothing line and doing normal things, such as skateboarding and surfing, for a person of his age.
The fourteen-year-old Smith appeared in his breakthrough role, again costarring with his father, in the 2006 hit “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Since then, his other notable role was playing the lead in the 2010 remake of “Karate Kid.”
His new film, “After Earth,” is a science-fiction film set one thousand years in the future after human beings have been forced to begin anew on another planet after theirs has become uninhabitable. Smith plays a cadet following his father, a high-profile military leader played by his real-life dad, Will Smith. When the two find themselves on a highly hostile Earth, the younger character must prove himself and save his father at the same time.
Between “Karate Kid” and “After Earth,” Smith spent three years away from the movies developing his music, launching his clothing line, and simply enjoying being a kid.
At the moment, Smith is working on a follow-up to his The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1 musical debut, a collection of rap tracks. He’s recently told the press he plans to collaborate with sister Willow on some musical projects. Willow released the pop hit “Whip My Hair” in 2009 and continues to release music online.
The siblings grew up in California, where they were homeschooled and attended the New Village Leadership Academy, a private elementary school that his parents cofounded and played a large role in running. Their older half-brother, Trey Smith, from their father’s previous marriage, is a DJ.
Smith wrote about his former girlfriend Stella Hudgens, younger sister of actor and singer Vanessa Hudgens, in his song “Starry Room.” His latest tracks include “Kite,” which features Willow Smith, and “MSFTS Anthem 2.”
Smith recently teamed with a Korean clothing designer to expand his own clothing brand, MSFTSrep, which offers everything from hoodies to trousers.
On the subject of clothing, Smith experienced a massive growth spurt while filming “After Earth,” keeping costume designers busy. The teen gained roughly twenty pounds and grew four inches throughout production. The spurt, however, was beneficial to the movie’s story line, which was filmed chronologically and took place over a long enough period.
While he may be growing at a fast clip, Smith recently squelched rumors that he was planning to seek emancipation from his parents when he soon turns fifteen. The actor, musician, and clothing designer told Ellen DeGeneres on a May 2013 episode of her talk show that he had no plans to leave his parents’ home any time soon, joking that his father told him that when he enjoys bigger box-office success than his parents have, he can buy his own home. His mother, incidentally, is actor Jada Pinkett Smith, who starred in “The Matrix Reloaded” and “Matrix Revolutions,” among other films.
While “After Earth” has received general unfavorable reviews from film critics, a number of reviewers have credited the younger Smith with turning in a worthy performance in the film.
On the heels of “After Earth,” Smith teamed with NASA to create a public service announcement promoting the new film as well as the space agency’s Earth Sciences programs. In the spots, Smith tells viewers that human beings must learn more about the environment to avoid seeing the planet end up like it appears in his post-apocalyptic film.
Smith’s other films include “Rip the Runway,” a 2013 television movie; a 2008 remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still”; the 2008 television series “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”; and the 2003-2004 television series “All of Us.”
Although Will Smith allowed Jaden Smith to make a cameo appearance in “Men in Black 2,” part of the elder Smith’s most successful cinematic franchise, he had said he would not allow his son to appear in additional sequels. However, Jaden Smith recently said he would love to act in the fourth installment of the series despite that his father won’t return for the fourth film. Since then, Will Smith has said that he would not mind if his son stepped into a larger role in future “Men in Black” films.
Since the premiere of “After Earth,” Smith was spotted wearing an Iron Man costume on a date with reality television star Kylie Jenner in New York City, leaving some to wonder if he was having fun with the paparazzi.
