Thomas Jefferson who promoted the critically important principle of “a wall of separation between Church and State” also encouraged us to embrace other principles which are key to Deism and the World Union of Deists. Those principles are found in this statement of Jefferson’s which he made regarding the principles the University of Virginia would be based on: “This institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.” (It’s interesting to note that the architectural layout of Jefferson’s University of Virginia broke with tradition by NOT being centered on a church or chapel, but, instead, on a library. The Deist Jefferson further upset people by banning theology from being taught at UVA.)
It seems today that many people think Deism and Deists should not be critical of the various “revealed”/hearsay religions. The above Jeffersonian principles should serve as a guide to let Deists and freethinkers know that an important part of our duty to our beliefs and to progress and to humanity is to protect the vitally important “illimitable freedom of the human mind” and “not be afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead” (this is how the leading Atheist Antony Flew evolved into a Deist), “nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.” By following these principles we are also showing true appreciation for our innate gift from God of reason.
Deism combats errors with reason. There is no getting around it. This should be seen as a great positive because it destroys the power of the “revealed”/hearsay religions and gives people the opportunity to free themselves from these dangerous mind-sets and to embrace and benefit from their innate God-given reason and Deism.
We are very fortunate to have an active fellow Deist and member of the World Union of Deists who is a gifted doctor and a great writer and speaker. Henry Jones, M.D. has written an outstanding eBook entitled Psychological Evolution & The Invention of Evil: A Scientific Exposition (you can order his eBook at the bottom of this page) which draws on his many years of experience as a psychiatrist and gives a very in-depth look at the origins of “revealed” religions, the damage they do to people and society and the best way to correct this very real problem. It’s also loaded with great inspiring thought provoking quotes. In this book Dr. Jones makes the statement, “Theism damages the mind rendering it vulnerable to enslavement, vulnerable to victimization.” This is very true as many of us know. What is also very true is Deism corrects this problem if given the chance.
Too many people don’t even realize Deism exists and that people who do believe in God are not limited to the “revealed”/hearsay religions. I recently received an email from a man who wrote “for years and years I strained my brain thinking that I must be missing something if so many other folks seem perfectly content with mainstream religion (in my case, Christianity). It took me a long time to realize that the majority isn’t always right.” Deism educates people to this important fact! By acting on the Jeffersonian principle to combat errors Deism has the real potential to greatly improve countless lives of individual people as well as to greatly improve society as a whole.
