Perhaps the most famous interview Jim Morrison ever did was with Jerry Hopkins for Rolling Stone Magazine, it certainly tied Hopkins to Morrison for the rest of his life, it led to his writing the Morrison biography No One Here Gets Out Alive which is probably still the ‘gateway’ biography new fans find Jim Morrison and The Doors through.
The idea for an interview with Morrison came soon after the “Miami Incident’ Rolling Stone ran the infamous cover of Jim Morrison on a wanted poster, and Hopkins thought Rolling Stone’s coverage of the affair made Morrison appear as a fool. Hopkins thought otherwise and pitched to Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner the idea for an in-depth interview. Morrison was at first skeptical about an interview with Rolling Stone but acceded to Hopkins request and the interview occurred in early May of 1969. Hopkins followed Morrison around for two weeks interviewing him in a variety of locales, The Doors office, over lunch and drinks, and a topless bar. To Hopkins it appeared that Morrison was trying to balance out the previous coverage of him by Rolling Stone, Morrison was “well-behaved, thoughtful and articulate.”
The interview itself was thorough going from the history of The Doors to Morrison’s ideas on manipulating the media and how at first he controlled it (or thought he could) and later realizing he may have been reacting to forces he only vaguely was aware of. The interview, as well as some of the riots Doors performances provoked. The interview concludes with Morrison convincing Hopkins to go off for a drink. The interview was published in the July 26, 1969 issue of Rolling Stone and included one of Morrison’s poem as a coda to the article.
While Hopkins career has varied over the years and has taken him to Hong-Kong where he now lives and writes about he has recently revisited The Doors in the form of the Kindle book Behind Closed Doors (see related articles for The Doors Examiner review), in which he describes his attempts to release a Kindle version of No One Here… but was stopped by The Doors and Danny Sugerman’s widow.
