Johnny Depp says he’s thinking about quitting acting. On July 29, 2013, BBC broadcast an interview that Depp did to promote his movie “The Lone Ranger,” which has been a major flop.
In the interview, Depp (who turned 50 years old in 2013) commented about his possible retirement from acting: “I wouldn’t say that I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away. At a certain point, you start thinking, and when you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year, for example, and you realize that you’ve said written words more than you’ve actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking of that as a kind of insane option for a human being.”
Even though Depp is one of the highest-paid actors in the world (he is usually paid about $20 million to star in a major studio movie), Depp may be thinking about quitting acting because he’s had several bombs with his most recent movies that aren’t part of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise: 2010’s “The Tourist,” 2011’s “The Rum Diaries,” 2012’s “Dark Shadows” and 2013’s “The Lone Ranger.” Not only were these movies flops with movie audiences, but they were also panned by most movie critics.
Depp is set to star in the fifth “Pirates of Caribbean” movie, which will be released on July 10, 2015. In 2014, his movies “Transcendence” and “Into the Woods” will be released on dates to be announced. There have also been reports that Depp is going to do a sequel to his 2010 blockbuster hit “Alice in Wonderland.”
And what would Depp do if he weren’t an actor? He would probably direct. He has directed two feature films: “The Brave” (released in 1997) and a still-untitled documentary about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. The documentary about Richards does not have a release date and has not been screened for the public. Depp told Event magazine that that movie has completed filming but it has not been decided yet when the movie will be ready for public viewing.
Depp has said in many interviews that Richards was his main inspiration in playing the “Pirates of Caribbean” character Captain Jack Sparrow. Richards has had small roles in a few of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies as Jack Sparrow’s father, Captain Teague.
Of course, there are other actors-turned-directors (including Clint Eastwood and Sean Penn) who claimed they were going to quit acting, but they never did. It’s highly unlikely that Depp will quit acting in the next 10 years.
