The Fourth of July means patriotic flag waving, barbecues and fireworks. However, for the millions of Americans who have to go to work on Friday, catching a local fireworks show live may not be in the cards. Don’t fret because superstars Mariah Carey, Tim McGraw and Barry Manilow are on tap for national Fourth of July TV specials that will spark your patriotic spirit, complete with fireworks, but minus the traffic and overwhelming crowds.
“Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest”
Six-time champion Joey Chestnut sets his stomach on breaking his 68-dog record. Just don’t try it at home. “These people are professionals,” says announcer Paul Page, who’s been providing the chow-down’s play-by-play for nine years. For the first time ever, qualifying events were held all over the country. The top male and top female finishers from each qualifier earned a trip to compete at the televised finals at the original Nathan’s Famous on Coney Island on July Fourth. This year’s ESPN show will air on July 4th at 1 p.m. EST.
“Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular 2013”
NBC celebrates the nation’s birthday extravaganza with an all-star line-up of performances by Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and country superstar Tim McGraw. Nick Cannon from NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” hosts the 37th annual July 4th celebration. For the first time ever, the world-famous Macy’s fireworks display show will feature a collaboration with Grammy-winner Usher to help inspire and light up the sky to celebrate America’s Independence Day. The nationally televised event culminates with an awe-inspiring display of patriotic power, set to explode over the Hudson River in New York City. The theme of this year’s Macy’s fireworks show is “It Begins with a Spark.” More than 40,000 fireworks will burst in synchronized perfection to a dynamic 25-minute score that includes a mix of American standards and the hottest pop favorites. A spokesperson from Macy’s says, “With this first-ever collaboration with Usher, we are taking the show to the next level of entertainment spectacle, combining the very best of Macy’s Fireworks with Usher’s unparalleled artistic vision.” “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular” airs on Thursday, July 4th from 8-10 p.m. EST on NBC.
“A Capitol Fourth 2013”
There’s nothing more patriotic than a Fourth of July celebration in Washington DC. This year’s 90-minute extravaganza is hosted by Tom Bergeron from “Dancing with the Stars” and includes performances by Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Candice Glover, Scotty McCreery, Darren Criss, Jackie Evancho, Megan Hilty, John Williams, The National Symphony Orchestra, and assorted military bands. In celebration of America’s 237th birthday, the show will be capped off with a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire provided by The United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and now an “A Capitol Fourth” tradition. “A Capitol Fourth 2013” airs from 8-9:30 p.m. EST on July 4th on PBS.
“Philly 4th of July Jam 2013”
Comedian Kevin Hart hosts the third annual “Philly 4th of July Jam” on VH1. Viewers will enjoy performances by Demi Lovato, John Mayer, Ne-Yo, The Roots, Grace Potter, J. Cole and others. The Party on the Parkway and fireworks finale airs from 8-11 p.m. EST on July 4th on VH1.
