During the summer of 2013, LA TV Insider Examiner will be looking at the week ahead for our primetime programming recommendations, rather than day-by-day. The summer season is notoriously lighter with originals, especially scripted originals. But we will work tirelessly to find worthy options!
For June 30 – July 4 2013, LA TV Insider Examiner recommends:
- Sunday, June 30:
The Killing (AMC, 9 p.m.) – “Eminent Domain” – Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) catch up to the latest victim, which Seward’s (Peter Sarsgaard) past catches up to him. And Bullet (Bex Taylor-Klaus) has trouble dealing with the truth.
Dexter (SHO, 9 p.m.) – “A Beautiful Day” – It’s been 6 months since LaGuerta’s murder – and Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is still managing life as a dad, brother, and serial killer. Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) now works as a PI for a private firm, and Batista (David Zayas) has replaced her as Lieutenant. Meanwhile, Miami Metro investigates the murder of a man who has had pieces of his brain removed. You can read our full advance review here.
Ray Donovan (SHO, 10 p.m.) – “Pilot”/”The Bag or the Bat” – Set in the sprawling mecca of the rich and famous, Ray Donovan (Liev Schrieber) does the dirty work for LA’s top power players. He’s the go-to guy who makes the problems of the city’s celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. This powerful family drama unfolds when his father, played by Jon Voight, is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core. The series’ all-star cast also includes Oscar winner and guest star Elliott Gould as Ray’s long-time client and mentor, Paula Malcomson in the role of Ray’s wife, Abby, along with Eddie Marsan and Dash Mihok, who will play Ray’s brothers. Falling Skies (TNT, 10 p.m.) – “Search and Recover” – When a mission takes a potentially deadly turn, Tom (Noah Wyle) and Pope (Colin Cunningham) must rely on each other to survive. Meanwhile, Charleston is desperate to find two missing members, and more rebellions break out.
- Monday, July 1:
Switched at Birth (ABC Family, 8 p.m.) – “He Did What He Wanted” – The politics of being a senator’s wife are put to the test when Kathryn (Lea Thompson) has an uncomfortable encounter. Daphne (Katie Leclerc) is getting mixed signals from Jace, and Bay (Vanessa Marano) learns more about Mary Beth and Ty (Blair Redford). Meanwhile, Angelo (Gilles Marini) joins the country club, and Regina (Constance Marie) starts a new job.
The Fosters (ABC Family, 9 p.m.) – “The Morning After” – When things between Jesus (Jake T. Austin) and Lexi get hot and heavy, they are forced to face the possible consequences of their actions. Meanwhile, Callie (Maia Mitchell) gets closer to Wyatt but Brandon (David Lambert) has serious reservations about Callie dating a “bad boy.” Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) learn that two of their close friends are having major relationship trouble and it causes them to look at the lack of romance in their own lives. Kelly and Jenna’s hip and educated son, Garret (played by real life slam poet Noah St. John), catches Mariana’s (Cierra Ramirez) eye and she becomes desperate to fit in with his cool, edgy crowd. Jude is bullied at school for being different.
Under The Dome (CBS, 10 p.m.) – “The Fire” – The severity of the situation starts to sink in for the residents of Chester’s Mill when a house fire causes panic because the firefighters are unable to break through the dome to help.
- Tuesday, July 2:
So You Think You Can Dance (FOX, 8 p.m.) – “Top 20 Perform/2 Are Eliminated” – With the semi-finalists performing for a second time, only 18 of the 20 will make it through.
Twisted (ABC Family, 9 p.m.) – “Sleeping with the Frenemy” – Lacey’s mom Judy (guest Robin Givens) invites Jo (Maddie Hasson) to a sleepover, much to Lacey’s (Kylie Branbury) dismay. Despite the promise of an incredibly awkward evening, Jo seizes the opportunity to get closer to Regina’s friends and uncover potential evidence that points to another suspect in her murder. Tess persuades Karen (Denise Richards) to reconnect with her old friends, only to have it end in humiliation when Regina’s mother Gloria (guest star Jessica Tuck) viciously confronts Karen about Danny (Avan Jogia). Meanwhile, Danny has his first soccer match and struggles to stay on civil terms with Archie (Grey Damon) and his teammates, and Kyle steps up his investigation.
- Wednesday, July 3:
Franklin & Bash (TNT, 9 p.m.) – “Captain Johnny” – The guys defend a fisherman, and Rachel (Heather Locklear) takes on a wrongful termination suit involving a psychic. But it’s not all work, all the time; Peter (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Jared (Breckin Meyer) do a little redecorating of their new Malibu pad, too.
- Thursday, July 4:
Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectactular (NBC, 8 p.m.) – Nick Cannon hosts coverage of Macy’s 37th annual fireworks display over Manhattan. This year performers include Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, and Selena Gomez.
