The Eighth Annual Marble Day festival was held in Bonner Springs, Kansas on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Marble Day, which is hosted in part by the Moon Marble Company, is held each year on the first Saturday in May. While the weather was a little chilly, marble enthusiasts came out in great numbers for a fun celebration for all ages.
Marble Day festivities are mostly held in downtown Bonner Springs. The list of activities includes a tractor parade, the bike rodeo, and wacky pet tricks. Perhaps the two most known events of Marble Day are the “Running of the Pinkys” and the Annual Marble Day marble tournament. The “Running of the Pinkys” is an enjoyable experience for both kids and adults. Over five thousand pink rubber balls are poured out of a dump truck and race two blocks to the bottom of the street. Children and their parents pour into the street to provide additional obstacles in a mad free-for-all to attempt to obstruct balls from getting to the finish line quickly. People may sponsor one of the pink rubber balls for $2 with half of the proceeds going to Bonner Animal Rescue. The first ten balls to reach the bottom of the street will receive prizes. The annual marble tournament is open to all children aged fifteen and younger and prizes are awarded to first, second, and third place with the overall winner getting $100 and a handmade shooter marble from Moon Marble Company.
None of the fun of Marble Day could be possible without the assistance of Moon Marble Company. Moon Marble, founded by Bruce Breslow, opened its doors in 1997. Of special interest for visitors is the demonstration of how marbles are made. This short program will touch on how to work with glass, as well as the history of marbles. Moon Marble is also home to a gift shop where visitors may purchase their own marble set or browse through the many classic games that are for sale in the shop. Vintage metal signs and fountains are also sold in the shop as well.
Moon Marble Company is located in Bonner Springs, KS near the intersection of K-32 and Highway 7. The store is open on Tuesday through Saturday each week from 10 am to 5 pm. Marble making demonstrations may be seen on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays beginning at 10:30 am and ending at approximately 3:00 pm.
