Krockathon 18 came and went this past weekend and due to a family obligation this guy was unable to make the show. Disappointing as I have only missed maybe six of these between working security, just going, or covering the show. Fortunately, being the trustable kind of guy that I am, I found a worthy fill-in to cover it, talk about it, and most importantly interview LaJon Witherspoon of Sevendust. So, I gave the sign of the cross with horns up to Rokken Randy; unabashed Stryper and everything 80’s metal fan but a guy that seems on the up and up and trustworthy, plus I knew he would be stoked so what the hell, Randy it was! He had a full day lined up (early too) in his first venture into the ‘reporter pool’ and he did a bang up job. His interest was with Sevendust more than anything otherwise I would have set up more in-person interviews, but I get being nervous the first few times too. It is different talking to these guys from a fan point to trying to make a story, indeed.

All That Remains
Three Days Grace
Stars In Stereo
I had interviewed members of Sevendust and Asking Alexandria previously so click on the names of the bands there to check those interviews out. In the meantime, here is what ‘RR’ had to say.
This was your first time as a reporter with credentials, how was the experience for you?
*It was really cool and I am appreciative of the opportunity. Thankful to be perceived as trustworthy and someone you thought could “pull it off”.
There were a lot of bands at Krockathon both local and national; what are some of the stand out performances for you and why?
*SKILLET — They always bring the energy and positive message. P.O.D. — No strangers to Syracuse. Never disappoint. Positive message. ALL THAT REMAINS — Bringing the “metal” !! — Super musicianship. SEVENDUST — Great performers. Powerful music.
Lajon is a real cool guy, how was that experience sitting and interviewing him and who held the camera?
*I am thankful that Lajon was super cool. Prior to filming I had conveyed that this was my first time and he said, “You have to start somewhere.” Glad he went along with my [STRYPER/80’s metal] angle for this one. Production Assistant Amber Juba held the camera. That was appreciated.
How were the Krock people with you?
*No direct interaction. Security people were helpful when asking questions.
Thinking of the crowd, how were they throughout the day and were their any particular things that stood out?
*My first opportunity to enter a Photo Pit would be blocked because of safety concerns with crowd surfers. They decided to allow only security in that area.
Lajon at the end of the SEVENDUST set said that the security did a “kick ass” job. — Just another tidbit for you.
Check out his video interview with Lajon and look for more music reviews and interviews, I have too many to list and that’s not even bringing up this weekends 95XFest and Krocks free show.
