This week’s wine tasting options are really varied and fun. To list would, well, be pointless since you can look, below and see which wine shop is offering what, and it’s obvious who’s feeling creative this week…, the last week of July, 2013! A month and a half of summer left, so get out there, and take a new favorite wine with you!
So, how do you think a Pinot Noir popsicle would go over… or would you believe… your are heading out to a festival, a park where… glass containers, we’ll glass, is not allowed… what do you do with the bottle of Arthur… well, you could…
And lastly, and certainly of note… Why, oh please tell why wine cries??? ‘Just gotta know!!!
Taste and learn what you like, no matter what your spouses of friends have to say about it. It’s you who tastes the wine in your glass, and it should please YOU!
Please be safe, and enjoy this week’s offerings!

Mourvedre, Mo’ Better!
The Mourvedre grape is native to Southern France and most notably used in Rhone blends and in the wines of Bandol. Lately, we keep bumping into new domestic versions we find quite compelling, so for this week’s Friday Night Flight, we’re going to shuffle up our own mix-tape of flavors and offer a couple from France and a couple from the US in a little head-to-head battle of the continents. Come join us. $12 Main Flight fee* + Bonus Pours!

Fresh and elegant. Layers of flavors. Elderberry, anise, summer melon and beeswax.
Charles Smith “Eve” Chardonnay 2012 $10.99
Beautifully rich yet fresh and tasty. Aromas of white nectarine, mango and dew covered rose. White raspberry, leechi fruit and peach combine with a lush soft mouthfeel. Columbia Valley, WA
Happy Camper Chardonnay 2012 $8.99
A refreshing Summer quaff.
Charles Smith “Kung Foo Girl” Riesling 2012 $11.99
White peach, Linden leaves and slate. Lovely focused acidity, finishing very long with mandarin orange and lots of minerality.
Wine Spectator “Best Value” 2009, 2010, 2011. Columbia Valley, WA
Robert Parker 2011 90pts, 2012 90pts
Charles Bieler “Liquid Geography” Rose 2012 $10.99
This wine comes from the Bullas D.O., located in the province of Murcia in the southeast corner of the country. The Monastrell grape (known as Mourvèdre in France) reigns supreme here, accounting for over 80% of the planted acreage. These particular Monastrell vines are between 20 and 25 years old. Murcia, Spain
Ripe Strawberry backed with minerality and subtle structure. Perfect for a warm summer afternoon.
Bieler Pere & Fils “Lou Ven Tou” 2011 $10.99
The grapes were organically grown and hand harvested. The aging was in concrete (no trees were killed in the making of this wine). The final blend is grenache, syrah, cinsault, viognier. The wine opens with the subtle fragrance of cherries and figs and herbs de Provence. It has a clean bright palate with notes of black tea, forest aromas, and black fruit. Its finish is long with great texture and fruit that carries through to the end. Provence, France
Seeing Red Cabernet Sauvignon $12.99
82% Cabernet and 18% Merlot from the Columbia Valley. The nose on this wine is a clear highlight, with its oaky and dark floral notes making for a definite treat. Seeing Red is aged in new American and neutral French barrels. The American Oak makes a real impression. On the palate the wine has notes of cherry, cola and light pepper. The wine is medium-bodied and the tannins are present but subtle on this Cabernet.
Its has been a very popular wine here at John’s Mkt.
Also: Tom Bowers will be pouring some excellent beers from Merchant du Vin from 4-6:00. The beer tasting is free. Go to Johnsmarketplace.com for more details.

What better way to start than with another tour de force of deliciousness, character, and soul that are the incredible wines of southern Italy. Nothing shameful or embarrassing here, just rich and luscious, perhaps even darkly sensual. Definitely wines you’d want to strike up an actual relationship with. Although should you feel the need to tweet while tasting feel free. Just keep it semi-clean, please. Not that I’m the poster boy for decorum, but still. Anyway, these wines are truly wonderful expressions of the land they come from, great for summer sipping, and certainly cellar worthy in the upper ends. Bring your curiosity and your thirsts as another glorious nightmon the patio awaits with these delights….
