Angel Velazquez, 21, of 286 Howard Street was arrested earlier this week for disorderly conduct and animal cruelty after an officer directing traffic on Haverhill Street observed Velazquez swinging the metal part of a leash and striking a young pit bull.
According to the Eagle Tribune, Officer Ivan Mendez stated in his report:
“The dog was cowering and appeared to be shaking out of control with fear. I saw the owner pull back the leash as to strike the dog and yelled out to stop. The owner who appeared enraged with the dog looked over to see me in my detail uniform and put down the leash.”
Other witnesses at a construction crew reported Velazquez angrily stating he could do whatever he wanted to the dog.
When Animal Control arrived, authorities discovered the nine-month-old adorable blue nose pit bull named Domenick belonged to Marsha Garfield, a neighbor of Velazquez who hired the young man to walk her dog. Domenick was reported to be extremely well cared for and properly licensed and vaccinated and was promptly returned to his owner.
Velaquez faces up to a $2,500 fine and up to five years in prison if convicted of animal cruelty. He denies hitting the dog, and was reported to have stated he just raised the leash ordering Dominick to stop at the intersection.
So how does one make sure they have a good dog walker and someone who will treat their dog with kindness, patience, and respect?
There are certain acceptable standards you might like to check out first. Here are just a few suggestions:
- Make sure your dog walker has references. Check them.
- Dog walkers should have insurance. These people have access to your home and your dog. What happens if they lose your house keys? What happens if they lose your dog?
- Have a criminal background done of any potential dog walker.
- Check qualifications if a dog walker claims to be a dog trainer or a vet assistant.
- Make sure your dog walker knows first aid.
- Closely observe the interaction between your dog and the potential dog walker.
