On May 6, 2013 Eva Longoria and executives from Lay’s® Potato Chips crowned Karen Weber-Mendham, from Land O’Lakes, Wisconsin, the grand prize winner of the latest ‘Do us a flavor’ contest, for her Cheesy Garlic Bread flavor submission.
“The “Do us a flavor” contest has proven to be a successful model for PepsiCo around the world as the contest has been previously held in numerous countries with consumers suggesting millions of chip flavors. From the UK and India to Australia and South Africa, the “Do us a flavor” contest has resulted in a wide spectrum of popular consumer-created chip flavors, including Mastana Mango, Walkie Talkie Chicken, Caesar Salad, Chilli & Chocolate, Late Night Kebob and even Cajun Squirrel. The United States version of this contest had a rocky start as opening day of submissions on July, 12, 2012 was met with the Lay’s® ‘Do us a flavor’ FaceBook contest page crashing! PepsiCo, Lay’s® and it’s beloved fans were not to be deterred and the contest persevered.
Weber-Mendham was one of three finalists chosen from nearly 3.8 million fan submissions gathered between July and October 2012:
Chicken & Waffles – submitted by Christina Abu-Judom, from Phoenix, Arizona.
Cheesy Garlic Bread – submitted by Karen Weber- Mendham, from Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin.
Sriracha – submitted by Tyler Raineri, from Lake Zurich, Illinois. (Sriracha is a type of hot sauce, thought to originate from Eastern Thailand.)
All three flavors are available for purchase at stores nationwide, for a limited time only.
On February 12, 2013, actress and restaurateur Eva Longoria, celebrity chef and restaurateur Michael Symon, and Frito-Lay and PepsiCo executives met up with the finalists at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), who rang the opening bell, introduced their flavors and invited America to “invest” in a favorite. From there, the three finalists, Longoria, and Symon invited New Yorkers to stop by the 32-foot all-electric Frito-Lay delivery truck parked outside the NYSE building to enjoy free samples of all three finalist flavors, along with refreshing Pepsi beverages.

The closing ceremonies for the ‘Do us a flavor’ contest were held with Hollywood style flare.
Actress and restaurateur Eva Longoria’s opened up her restaurant, Beso Restaurant, in Hollywood, on May 6, 2013, as the venue for the star studded, red carpet grand prize winner reveal event. Attendees enjoyed the Beso cuisine in environs inspired by the finalist flavors. Karen Weber-Mendham from Land O’ Lakes, Wis., and creator of the Cheesy Garlic Bread flavored Lay’s® Potato Chip was then crowned the grand prize winner.
As the Lay® ‘Do us a flavor’ finalist, Karen Weber-Mendham will receive $1 million in grand prize money or one percent of her flavor’s 2013 net sales (whichever is higher). The two runner-up finalists will each win $50,000 in prize money.
The Lay’s® Potato Chips Cheesy Garlic Bread flavor is described as follows:
Weber-Mendham was inspired to create the Lay’s® Potato Chips Cheesy Garlic Bread flavor by her many visits to the pizza parlor with her three children who love to devour the cheesy garlic bread appetizers.
