A new social network for language learning is born, and its name is Lingualia. The idea behind this fresh approach is to create an online community of native speakers who will be able to practise their new language via chat. In fact, the best way to learn a foreign language is to overcome the fear of speaking it. A real online community can be a tremendous tool, not only for practicing, but also asking questions, sharing experiences, and making new friends.
Lingu: Student-focussed learning
Learning a foreign language can be enormously challenging; students often struggle to perfect their pronunciation while memorising endless grammar rules and vocabulary. There are a lot of well designed applications and tools out there to help people in the arduous task of learning a second language, but they share one major problem: they are not specifically tailored to suit user’s individual needs.
What makes Lingualia really special is that, unlike other platforms where the student must adapt to the course, it is the course that adapts to the specific needs of the student. In order to achieve this goal, we have developed Lingu, a made-to-measure language teacher. Programmed with an algorithm based on artificial intelligence, Lingu has the ability to learn from each user, and adjust the content to meet their individual requirements.
As Lingu learns from the students, he studies their behaviour, tracks their progress, monitors the time they can devote to learning, and measures their motivation. With all these information gathered, it is able to take decisions in order to design a completely unique learning experience. This method allows students to learn from their mistakes, thanks to the support and explanations that Lingu provides.
In the words of Sergio Blanco, CEO of Lingualia: “At Lingualia, the student isn’t forced to adapt to the course; the course adapts to the student. This way, students’ motivation increases and they achieve a much faster progress with a lot less effort.”
Take Lingualia with you
With Lingualia, students’ progress doesn’t depend on an intense, daily investment of time. It doesn’t matter if users can only spend studying ten minutes or even one entire hour a day: they can continue their course whenever they want using their desktop computer, tablet or smartphone. Our system will synchronise user’s progress and activity across all devices so they can continue from the same exact point where they left off, allowing them to learn on the go, with complete freedom to study at their own pace.
Students can access Lingualia via the website (www.lingualia.com) or by downloading the app from the Apple App Store (we’re currently working on the Android app). The content of the courses has been designed by certified, education professionals, and covers four levels, with more than 200 lessons, and 8,000 professionally recorded audios. All lessons are geared to real-life, practical situations. Basic membership is free, and an access-all-areas premium membership offers additional learning materials and services. Lingualia currently offers Spanish and English courses, and is working towards increasing its language portfolio in the near future.
