Every two years the City of Longmont showcases it’s airport, Vance Brand Municipal Airport (or more commonly known as Longmont Airport or LMO to pilots) with a FREE one day airport expo that will be held this Saturday, June 22nd from 7am-4pm.
New this year, the Colorado Aviation Historical Society has partnered with the airport to hold it’s first annual Colorado Aviation Classic with a theme “Where History Flies in From the Past” is designed to showcase some of the finest examples of vintage aircraft throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. Planes will judged at the expo in different categories, including a People’s Choice category voted on by expo spectators. Additionally, attendees and airplanes from a five state area and multiple era’s including vintage biplanes, general aviation aircraft, jets, and helicopters, are expected to come to the expo and aircraft will be on display all day for the event.
At the noon hour, opening ceremonies will kick off with Longmont Idol 2012 Junior winner Mari Powell singing the national anthem, followed by a flag ceremony and skydive by Longmont City Councilwoman Katie Witt and local Denver 9News new personality Amelia Rose Earhart from the Mile-Hi Skydiving plane. Amelia, know for sharing a distant ancestry with her namesake the first Amelia Earhart, will be at the expo to promote her Fly With Amelia Foundation, which helps gives youth the opportunity to learn to fly. This will be followed by an airshow until approximately 3pm by top airshow performers.
Cessna Corporation will also be bringing in a brand new Cessna 172 Skyhawk as part of it’s Cessna Discovery Flying Challenge, a one-of-a-kind program with six pilots flying all over the country and visiting local airports to generate excitement about general aviation and to encourage people to learn to fly by showcasing the Cessna and visiting local airport communities. Pilot Brian Dierks is the pilot traveling around Colorado and will be flying in to the Longmont Airport Expo.
Additionally, there will a KidSpace with kids activities provided by Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, a mobile aviation museum from Spirit of Flight Center of Erie, a jet dragster from Redstone College, multiple aerobatic performers and fly-bys, Boulder County Sheriff Bomb Squad and K-9 Unit demos, classic cars and motorcycles, RC aircraft, seminars for registered pilots, skydiving demos, vendors and food concessions. Also new this year is a Longmont Sister Cities beer garden and silent auction of aviation memorabilia, with beer donated by Left Hand Brewery.
Finally, the Northern Colorado Mustang Car Club, who will hold a car parade down the airport runway in support of Operation Gratitude, which is a national program providing our U.S. military serving abroad with a wide range of support from home. Longmont Airport Expo attendees are encouraged to stop by Mustang Row to make donations and write well wishes on Longmont Airport stationary to our U.S. military. There will also be a donation box and everyone who donates will get a ticket in a drawing for an American flag. According to Northern Colorado Mustang Car Club Director Ken Zutz, “the letters and notes are included in care packages that get sent to active duty troops and many of the troops that receive the care packages say the most cherished things in the packages are the hand written letters!”
While at the expo, be sure to check out the new fixed base operator (FBO) at the airport, Elite Aviation, which has great expansion plans for the airport and is excited to be on site to enjoy the airport expo after recently opening as the new airport FBO.
The 2013 Longmont Airport Expo, powered by PrestigeDodge.com, also could not take place if it weren’t for the generosity of corporate sponsors and local businesses, the City of Longmont and Visit Longmont, individual donors and the commitment of it’s mostly volunteer planning committee and local pilot community.
The expo kicks off at 7am-9:30am with a pancake breakfast provided for a $5 charge by the on airport eatery Flight Deck Grill. There will also be multiple food vendors providing food throughout the day as well. Gates close at 4pm. Expect traffic, try to carpool or arrive early, or stay for a discounted Longmont Airport rate at the airport partner hotel, Best Western Plus Plaza Hotel and enjoy a free shuttle to/from the expo.
