Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. “A” means no or negative. “Myo” refers to muscle, and “Trophic” means nourishment–”No muscle nourishment.” When a muscle has no nourishment, it “atrophies” or wastes away. “Lateral” identifies the areas in a person’s spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening (“sclerosis”) in the region.
As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become smaller). Limbs begin to look “thinner” as muscle tissue atrophies.
This disease is one of the worst we deal with. Doctors and scientists have studied and explored various reasons as to whom and why a person gets such a disease with no known cure. They felt for a while that it only attacked those people with extremely high IQ’s. Then people with a low IQ got it so that theory went away. They then thought it to be attacking people who smoked heavily. That too proved to be wrong as people who had never smoked a day in their life began to get ALS. The current study is that it has something to do with the environment. But does it?
Here a little known fact that will peak your interest. Fifty percent – 50% – of all known cases in the United States are with people in the Military! And there is an unsubstantiated statistic that there is a military base here in the U.S. that ten percent – 10% – of its occupants have ALS. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
It is no more a coincidence than the rise in the number of children getting Autism at an alarming rate now that the inoculations that our kids get have Mercury in it. That’s right Mercury. The Mercury that caused the government to ban oral thermometers that had liquid mercury in them as you might bit into it and suffer brain damage. But now it is okay to place into shots including the flu shots we all get every year.
So if there is a rise in the number of kids getting Autism and the Military getting ALS and they both are required to get inoculations….
