Relationships and friendships strain when one partner is college educated and the other isn’t. Typically, the degree holder is a better problem solver and is much better at setting and accomplishing goals.
Three of VH1s Love and Hip Hop reality stars are college educated: K.Michelle, DJ Babey Drew, and Rich Dollaz. There may be more, but I’m focusing on this trio because (thankfully) their histories and affiliations are public via a Google search.
On Monday night’s Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, DJ Babey Drew found himself in yet another knot with his ex-lover DJ Traci Steele. Drew stood by blindly while Traci took an intellectual beating from a college degree holder who grew quickly disgusted with Traci’s inability to diplomatically discuss women, art, music, nudity and film.
Fact: More women with college degrees are likely to get pregnant with men they marry. Those who don’t have degrees are more than likely to end up in a position Traci loathes–“baby mama”.
Traci removed her shoes and went after the college girl because the slight from the college educated job seeker hurt. DJ Babey Drew (Andrew Bisnaught) attended Hampton University, which has been dubbed the Harvard of HBCU’s. (Incidentally, Booker T. Washington attended Hampton in his early teens).
Today, more of the nation’s mothers are women who’ve been to college. Reality star DJ Traci Steele earns big dollars as a radio personality in Atlanta (six figures). She’s also an Air Force vet with four years under her belt. Yet, Steele comprises the declining percentage of American women who gave birth in the 21st century without having at least some college.
Rich Dollaz, Love and Hip Hop (New York) reality star, took a lot of heat for his romance with a younger, untamed video starlet. Dollaz is a frat brother (Kappa Alpha Psi), attended college in Nashville,Tennessee (Fisk University), but his frat brothers and business partners all frowned on Dollaz’ decision to abandon his bourgeoisie fundamentals for a beautiful woman who lacked an education.
Fans either love or hate Atlanta loudmouth and Delta Sigma Theta soror K.Michelle (FAMU). Her hypocrisy is flagrant: on the one hand, she’s the traumatized victim of a brutally violent relationship, and an advocate to end violence against women. Yet there aren’t many episodes where she’s hasn’t initiated violence against women.
Oo-op and oh-oh.
Nevertheless, K.Michelle adheres staunchly to the profile that the Pew Research Center released about college educated women and childbirth. K. Michelle attended classes until “the day she gave birth”. She finished college and graduated in four years. It’s not just K.Michelle’s southern roots that position K.Michelle’s ideas on romance, love, marriage and children, it’s her college education (Hello Beautiful). (Plus, K.Michelle has explored bi-sexuality as well, and revealed it recently in a radio interview: a good move considering the mess she made on last night’s episode with her buddy Mimi’s boytoy, Nico).
