After an afternoon of seeing the local sights in Macon, Ga. — including the stomping grounds of Southern rockers the Allman Bros. — you’ll work up an appetite. The restaurant with the most sterling reputation in town is Marco Ristorante Italiano. I was glad to have been hosted to experience it!
Whether you eat in the main dining room, complete with live piano music, or in a private dining room, the ambiance is relaxed upscale.

Starting out the evening at Marco Ristorante Italiano
The cuisine bridges Italian comfort food and fine dining, depending on what you order. Presentation is thoughtful — such as a gauze-wrapped lemon — but you won’t find any culinary pyrotechnics here. Classic is the road taken.
If you’ve been chowing down elsewhere in the vicinity on fried and breaded foods, you’ll appreciate the palate cleansing effect of their Tricolor salad with radicchio, endive and spinach, drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil, a balsamic vinegar reduction and topped with Parmesan shavings. It adds a pleasant bitterness to jump-start your appetite.
Their salmon was beautifully cooked: grilled with a slight crispiness outside, moist and tender inside.
Ending the evening at Marco Ristorante Italiano
For dessert, I had a tiramisu, which was served “deconstructed” with the cake surrounded by the cream and lots of chocolate shavings. While it was flavorful, my “jury” is still out on the presentation. Here’s where their usual classic approach would have suited better.
The service — though many of the staff are quite young — is absolutely excellent. It’s clear that the servers have been well and thoroughly trained . . . when you’re traveling, you’ll appreciate the careful attention. Just yesterday, I was at a restaurant back home in the “big city,” where the service has been deplorable for 20 years — a huge local joke. When service is great, sometimes that makes all the difference in the world.
Special events at Marco Ristorante Italiano
