Today began a very important day of summer: the 66th annual Maine Lobster Festival! (http://www.mainelobsterfestival.com)
Chunks of delicious red spotted meat dipped in melted butter, a beautiful ocean view, fun activities to participate in, does this sound like paradise to you? Well you are in luck. This weekend, Rockland, Maine is hosting its annual festival dedicated to the wonderful food choice that is lobster.
When you add in all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts, Smokey’s Greatest Shows Carnival, Seafood cooking contests, tours of the US Coast Guard Station and the musical stylings of the Spin Doctors, there is lots of fun to be had at the festival. Just wandering around can provide hours of entertainment and enjoyment for the whole family.
If you’re looking to be a bit more active, there is also a road race, walk, and fun run for kids occurring on Sunday starting at 8AM. Or you could always participate in the the great Lobster Crate Race, jumping from crate to crate over the cold ocean water while trying to not fall in. (registration is at 7AM on Sunday).
Tickets for admission are only $8 for ages 12 and above, $2 for ages 6 to 11, and children under 5 get in for free.
While Rockland might be a bit of a drive from Boston (about three hours), it will be well worth the day trip. Or you can stay the night at one of several local hotels or B&Bs. Even if you don’t go to the festival on both days, there is still plenty to see in the area. Go walk on the beach and enjoy the sunny, salty air. Share another lobster with a loved one or friend. The coast of Maine is beautiful this time of year.
The Maine Lobster Festival has a lot to offer for the lobster lovers of New England, so pick up and go join the fun and food happening in Maine this weekend!
