Mark Lewisohn sent us the details Friday of the first volume in his three-volume Beatles biography. The first book, titled “All These Years: Tune In,” covers everything up to Dec. 31, 1962, and will be out this year. It can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com in the U.S., as well as Amazon.co.uk in Great Britain.
Lewisohn says the smaller mass-market U.S. hardback with 1,200 pages will be released Oct. 29 by Crown Archetype. The mass-market U.K hardback with 1,000 pages, will be released Oct. 10 from Little, Brown.
“The difference between the editions is words,” Lewisohn said, “about 380,000 in the UK, about 430,000 in the U.S. (The U.S. edition) will include the endnotes, omitted in the UK for space reasons.” The book will also be available as an e-book in the U.S. and the UK.
“The premium edition (‘author’s cut’) hardback, with approximately 2,000 pages, will come out in the UK from Little, Brown on Nov. 13,” Lewisohn says. He said the author’s cut will include about 780,000 words. But U.S. buyers wanting the premium edition will have to order it from the UK for at least this year.
“If Crown decide to take the author’s cut edition (in the U.S.), it won’t be this year. For the time being at least, it will be available only from the UK,” he said.
For those concerned about whether they’ll be able to get the premium edition, he told us the good news that it will not be limited.
“It’s too early to say how many author’s cut books will be printed. Little, Brown will assess that in due course,” he said, “But it won’t ‘sell out’ –- that is, it isn’t a limited edition, and more will be printed if stock runs low.”
He also offered this note on prices.
“Prices shown on Amazon are likely to fall. £120 ($182 U.S.) is Little, Brown’s peg for the author’s cut. It’ll probably end up around £85 ($128.91 U.S). I’ve been trying to insist it sells for under £100 because I want it to be affordable.”
(Note: If the price drops after you order it on Amazon, you are charged the lower price.)
