“The X-Men thought enough of Professor Xavier’s dream to offer up their lives. Is it so much to ask that we fight to preserve it?” –Rachel Anne Summers
Rachel Anne Summers is a mutant created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne who made her initial appearance with Uncanny X-Men #141 in 1981. Rachel is the daughter of Scott and Jean Grey-Summers in an alternate timeline and born from the Phoenix Force merging with Jean, inheriting her mother’s telepathic and telekinetic powers as well as limitless power of the entity itself. While Rachel was being raised at Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters , she met and befriended Franklin Richards and when her powers manifested, she joined the New Mutants in order to carry-on Xavier’s dream of a peaceful co-existence between humans and mutants.
During Days of Future Past, Rachel used her psionic powers to exchange Kate Pryde’s consciousness with Kitty Pryde in order to warn the X-Men of Senator Robert Kelly’s assassination attempt. However, this did not change her timeline and upon Kate’s return, she found the other X-Men aside from Rachel had all died in an attack on the Sentinels’ headquarters. Rachel later sent her astral self into the past to arrive in on Earth-616 and learned Kate arrived in the wrong timeline while also being discovered by the Phoenix Force. After returning, a piece of the entity traveled back with Rachel to her timeline where it boosted her powers which allowed her to physically travel back in time physically as well as mentally.
When Rachel arrives on Earth-616, she traveled to the Xavier School where she is eventually tutored by Xavier. While a member of the X-Men, Rachel visited Jean Grey’s parents where she finds a crystal imbued with Jean Grey’s imprint of her personality and decided to claim the name and power of Phoenix as her birthright. When sensing Scott Summers in danger, Rachel met him but hid her true origins from him and later, she traveled with the X-Men to Asgard in order to rescue Storm and the New Mutants from Loki while battling Fenris. After defeating Fenris, Rachel meets Nathan Christopher Charles Summers and creates a psi-bond with him and later becomes a captive of Spiral who takes her to the Mojoverse.
After being a slave to Mojo, Rachel eventually escapes and arrives in London where she’s tracked by Warwolves but when Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Meggan Puceanu and Captain Britain arrive to save her, the group bands together to form Excalibur. After battling Juggernaut and a group of escaped prisoners, Rachel and the rest of the Excalibur travel to Murderworld to battle the Crazy Gang where she felt baby Nathan cry-out for help so she left for New York City. Upon arriving, Rachel faced the Goblin Queen and assisted the group of heroes involved in Inferno. After the demonic invasion was prevented, Rachel went to visit baby Nathan where she learned Jean Grey was alive and then returned to Excalibur and the team returned to Rachel’s timeline to help end the genocide.
During the team’s return journey, Captain Britain is lost in the time-stream so Rachel sacrificed herself to exile in the time-stream in order to save him. While in the time-stream, Rachel diverged into two timelines where she became Mother Askani while Gaunt located the other Rachel and guided her to his timeline where she is enslaved and forced to telepathically summon Cable. Upon arriving, Cable fought Gaunt for Rachel’s freedom where the Techno-Organic Virus incapacitated Gaunt so Cable freed her and returned Rachel to Earth-616. Rachel then decided to retire from being a superhero and began attending college with Cable being the only one aware of her return.
Months later, Rachel is captured by Elias Bogan who uses her to enslave other mutants but after Bogan’s defeat, Rachel is freed from his control and rejoins the X-Men as Marvel Girl while also changing her last name to Grey. After House of M and Decimation, Rachel spent time with her grandparents where a Shi’ar commando unit attacked in hopes of wiping out the Grey genome, killing everyone except Rachel. When Gabriel appeared, Rachel accompanied a small team to pursue him into Shi’ar space which alerted a secret order of the Shi’ar government so they sent Korvus to eliminate Rachel. When the team met up with the Starjammers, Rachel witnessed Corsair’s death so Lilandra sends the team back to Earth except Havok, Polaris and Rachel.
The trio then decides to join the Starjammers in their resistance against Vulcan, Deathbird and the Shi’ar Empire. When the Scy’ar Tal arrived, the Starjammers and Shi’ar Empire called a cease-fire in order to combat the threat where Rachel assisted in preventing the Scy’arTal from committing genocide. When Vulcan betrays the Starjammers, Rachel fights with Gladiator to a standstill until Korvus is struck so she takes him from the scene while the Starjammers mysteriously leave. Later, Rachel helps the Starjammers, Inhumans and Guardians of the Galaxy assault a Shi’ar vessel to free Lilandra and try to end the conflict.
After Lilandra’s rescue, Rachel and the Starjammers becomes her bodyguard after she reassumes her throne once more but is later killed by a possessed Darkhawk. After the assassination, the Starjammers fight against the Shi’ar Death Commandos where she implodes Black Cloak’s head and the group later meets to mourn Lilandra. After the events of Schism, Rachel agrees to go with Wolverine to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning where she assists Cyclops during Avengers vs. X-Men by feeding the Avengers false information about Hope Summers’ whereabouts. Rachel then left the school to join the battle against the Avengers but then battled alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against her father after he succumbed to the Dark Phoenix. After AvX, Rachel returned to the Jean Grey School to resume her duties as a faculty member.
