Walking into local brewery MateVeza on a sunny day feels like a San Francisco tradition – and the brewery isn’t even that old. It’s only a block away from Dolores Park in the Mission, and it’s a great place to stock up on a great selection of beers before heading to the park.
Their proximity to this SF staple, coupled with their innovative brews (such as their Girl Scout Cookie series) makes MateVeza feel like an inherently small, local shop. All this, of course, makes it even more special to see MateVeza collaborate with the biggest, most famous craft brewery of them all: Samuel Adams.
The beer is called “Boston Tea Party Saison,” riffing off of Samuel Adams’ brewery location (Boston) and the key ingredient in MateVeza beers (yerba mate tea). According to Sam Adams, the beer also includes the Sam Adams’ “one-of-a-kind Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF), a blend of wild yeasts and bacteria designed to give beers unique flavors.”
It’s a delicious, refreshing beer, with a “slightly earthy and deliciously fruity character with a hint of spice and a long dry finish.”
How did local shop MateVeza create a collaboration brew with top dog Sam Adams? Turns out, MateVeza founder and brewer Jim Woods was the first participant in the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream Brewing and Business Experienceship. What is that? According to Sam Adams, it is “like an extended internship, it provides one craft brewer annually with hands-on educational and enrichment experiences, and is tailored to the awarded brewery’s business needs. The Experienceship includes a series of trips to the Samuel Adam’s Boston Brewery for extended coaching in everything from ingredients procurement, quality assurance, brewing, sales and distribution, among others.”
- It’s really cool that Sam Adams offers this “experienceship” to craft brewers. A word to ‘Big Beer’ – this isn’t fostering competition – it’s fostering community.
- It’s really cool that our own Jim Woods and MateVeza was the first participant in the program. Boston Tea Party Saison is our reward.
If you haven’t been to MateVeza, now is the time. Check out this quote from the great Jim Koch on Woods: “Jim Woods is an extremely talented brewer…I hope he got a lot out of the Experienceship program. We had a great time brewing together, and I’m confident he’ll continue to grow and succeed as a brewer.”
So, cheers to MateVeza, and the fostering of a great young brewery in San Francisco.
