City In The Sea
Their name comes from an Edgar Allan Poe poem. A dark look at a death and the band would no doubt put a smile on his face. Anyone looking for high energy, multi-layered new heavy music will like these guys. As I listened to a couple of songs I noticed several things; the band will bring the sound and energy of an Asking Alexandria to the stage but also switch gears within the songs so that fans of Killswitch Engage or Lamb Of God will connect easily. The have the ability to churn along during the main parts of a song only to drop into a different tempo and darkness on a dime and suddenly the guitars are screaming offering glimpses of future metal gods suddenly arrived.
City In The Sea is front and center just why you get to this festival early so you can say you were there as they said hello to the world of metal surrounded by giants and more then held their own.
The band is:
- Todd Christopher [vocals]
- Jeffrey Christian [vocals, guitar]
- Nick Rossi [guitar]
- Dan Marinaro [bass]
- Conor White [drums]
Their first album entitled Below The Noise is ready to go and by all means I suggest you pick this one up as soon as its ready. (See the bands new video below) To see them in their other video tearing it up watch Dead Beliefs here.
I had a conversation with bassist Dan Marinaro who just happens to originally hail from Thruway neighbor Buffalo, NY and inbetween his dog barking at something and the laughs, I find a young man that is very connected to where the band is and where they are going.
Another Phoenix, Arizona band; that must be one happening scene out there!
You know what man? It kind of ebbs and flows; sometimes there is some serious, serious local talent and then there is other times where it kind of slows and there is a lot of competition with the national shows and stuff like that. But there has been some really awesome bands that have come out of Phoenix!
Tell me about the band, you formed in high school?
The band City In The Sea was formed in 2005 when they were 15-16; I mean so young, I actually didn’t join the band until 2010, so technically I’m not an original member but yeah we all knew each other from other bands and stuff. Honestly where we went to school there were a bunch of rich kids and kids that weren’t into metal music; so the kids that were came together and started something.
And you were signed by my friends at Sumerian Records, and I mean quick without really having too much out there yet, how did that come about?
They contacted us through Myspace a long time ago and liked us and wanted us to go to California and do a showcase. So we drove out to California and played in this teeny little room with all of the label sitting on a couch in front of us so, they liked us and they signed us is pretty much how it starts.
You are working on your first album; I saw the video for Dead Beliefs; great song and video, any time stamp as of yet for the full album?
It’s sometime this summer. I think Sumerian is going to announce in a few weeks. We are really using Mayhem as a promotional tool for that, the album is actually done.
What are some of the bands influences?
We all listen to a crazy variety, the band itself like Lamb Of God and Killswitch Engage; bands that really were groundbreaking metal bands that made a statement when they came out.
You landed on THE festival this summer, Mayhem Festival alongside some of the greats, how did that come about and how excited is the band?
We got the offer when we were on tour and our manager called us and we were like holy crap! We all went to this as kids so to play with and meet all these people is really cool!
What will we see and hear when City In The Sea takes the stage?
Super high energy show! The song keeps moving, our set isn’t huge unfortunately but people love watching us because we go crazy onstage!
Lastly, what would you like to say to fans and the people headed to Mayhem Fest everywhere?
We are extremely excited to play for and meet all of you and see new faces! We are just so excited to show you guys what we have been working on for three years and unveil the band to everyone!
Well thanks for the time and maybe I’ll meet you guys in Darien Lake!
Oh cool! Are you from Buffalo?
I am from Syracuse, right down the ol’ Thruway.
Awesome, I grew up in Buffalo; I spent the first 15 years of my life in Buffalo.
No kidding? Small world indeed, a lot of talent comes out of Buffalo.
Yeah definitely, so nice to talk to you and see you there!
