Many have noted that the rabidly anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns (a wholly owned subsidiary of Michael Bloomberg, Inc.) is inaccurately named, with “Mayors Against Guns” being far more honest. Some wags note that given this group’s disturbing pattern of illegal behavior (which is ongoing, and more sordid every day), something like “Illegal Mayors Against Guns” would be the most honest.
But one could argue that it goes deeper than that–that the most appropriate name for them would be the exact opposite of the one they have chosen: “Mayors For Illegal Guns.” A group that is against “illegal guns,” after all, would not work so hard to dramatically increase their number. That, though, is precisely what MAIG does.
When they demand that so-called “assault weapons” be banned, they advocate expanding the ranks of “illegal guns” by millions. When they demand that guns accepting “high capacity” (eleven or more rounds) magazines be banned, they call for adding tens of millions to the number of “illegal guns.” When they demand that all semi-automatic pistols be equipped with “microstamping” technology, they are pushing for scores of millions more “illegal guns.” When they demand closing the “terror gap loophole,” they attempt to empower the Attorney General to make every gun sold to a political “undesirable” an “illegal gun.”
Their most precious desire, so called “universal background checks” would turn every privately sold firearm into an “illegal gun.”
If the group were truly against “illegal guns,” this column would have some good news for them–there is a simple way to reduce the number of such guns to zero. All that would be necessary is to repeal every gun law. No gun laws, no “illegal guns.”
The even better news is that this approach aligns perfectly with the Second Amendment’s shall not be infringed. If, in fact, countering “illegal guns” were their real intent, they would be hard pressed to choose a better rallying cry. “Shall not be infringed“–now those sound like the words of a “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” that Americans could get behind.
