Wondering what’s open, and what’s closed on Memorial Day 2013? Americans are asking, “Is there mail delivery on Memorial Day, and are the banks and DMV open Monday, May 27?” Many people have the holiday weekend off from work and are wondering if the post office is open on Memorial Day, and not surprisingly, is Best Buy, Target and Walmart open on Memorial Day? According to ABC 6 News on Sunday, May 26,
“Gov. Lincoln Chafee has ordered federal and Rhode Island flags to fly at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day in tribute to those who died while serving in the United States armed forces. Chafee’s order covers flags on all public buildings and grounds across Rhode Island. It is in response to a request by President Barack Obama to state and territorial governors to issue directives to ensure flags fly at half-staff until noon on Monday.”
Not to be confused with Veterans Day or Labor Day, Memorial Day is a federal holiday and is always observed on the last Monday of May. This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27, 2013.

“Due to Memorial Day being a Federal Holiday, all government offices will be closed Monday. That includes the U.S. Post Office and the Coventry Post Office. Coventry Town Hall, Greene Library and other city offices will close as well. Coventry Public Library will be closed both Sunday and Monday and will reopen on Tuesday, May 28.”

The U.S. Post Office is Closed on Memorial Day
According to the USPS Post Office, there is no mail delivery on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2013 in Rhode Island or the rest of the United States. Memorial Day is also a U.S. Postal Holiday (USPS), and all U.S. post offices are closed for business. This includes not only mail delivery to your Rhode Island residence or business, but also local post office lobby hours as well. Mail delivery will resume on Tuesday, May 28.

UPS and FedEx are Closed, Not Open Memorial Day
United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (FedEx) are not open for business and will not be delivering packages on Memorial Day 2013. Both UPS and FedEx observe and recognize the Memorial Day holiday and will not be conducting business as usual Monday, May 27. Both will resume normal delivery on Tuesday, May 28.
Are Banks Open on Memorial Day?
Because Memorial Day is a federal holiday, Monday, May 27 is also one of many bank holidays in 2013. Good news for TD Bank customers though! They’re one of the only banks that are open Memorial Day in the greater Providence, Rhode Island area. TD Bank stores are open abbreviated hours until 1 p.m. Call first to be sure if your local bank branch is open on Memorial Day.

Is Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Kmart Open on Memorial Day?
Absolutely! Rhode Island Walmart stores are open on Memorial Day! Some are open 24 hours, others open at 7 a.m. Most federal employees, government officials, teachers, and many other state employees have Memorial Day off, which means plenty of time for holiday shopping. Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kmart, and most retail stores have fantastic Memorial Day weekend sales and celebrations going on, and are counting on you to come in and spend plenty of money.
Public schools are closed on Memorial Day for the most part, however, private schools and colleges may, or may not be open for classes. It’s best to check first before you drop your kids off at school!
