Former Disney star Miley Cyrus has taken a lot of flack for her wild child persona, but in a new interview she reminds critics that she’s 20 years old and still evolving. On July 30, BBC Entertainment posted an interview with the former “Hannah Montana” star, in which she talked about her new, sexier image.
“I think people forget what it feels like to be 20. People just evolve and that’s all that’s happened to me,” she said. “But people think a mad scientist somehow cooked up this potion and turned me in to a different human, which it wasn’t. All I did was get a haircut and buy some clothes and everyone thinks that I am made into a robot that changes with what’s popular every 10 years.”
The pop star, who currently has a chart topper with the song “We Can’t Stop,” also defended her sometimes wild and crazy behavior.
“That’s what you’re supposed to do,’ she said. “You are 20, you are supposed to be a mess because you haven’t figured it out yet, and 10 years from now I am supposed to have it all together.”
She also talked about the Disney role that made her famous, admitting that it benefited her to make that money while she could at the time, despite the fact that it stifled her creativity.
“I worked for five years on something that was a character where I didn’t really get to be completely the creative person that I wanted to be,” she said. “I had to kinda make my money and do all that so now I don’t have to worry about necessarily any of that. I can just make music because I love it….I have an amazing fan base that’s followed me.”
It’s not the first time the 20-year old star has talked about growing up in the shadow of her Hannah Montana persona. Earlier this year she told Cosmopolitan, “Some of the worst things that have happened in my career, like things getting leaked, have actually been what’s best for me, because people knew when I was on that show that I was really growing up. I never faked anything. I never played the Disney game of smiling and being a princess and then suddenly having a hard time, saying, “’That isn’t who I really am.’”
Miley Cyrus’s new album is due out this fall.
