A Minnesota high school cheerleader has been arrested in an unusual case of prostitution and sex trafficking, authorities say, where she literally pimped out a younger student, setting up a contact webpage and even driving the younger teen to meet at least two men.
The Christian Science Monitor reported June 5 Montia Marie Parker, 18, of Hopkins High School was arrested on suspicion of sex trafficking and promoting prostitution and is scheduled for a court appearance on June 12. Authorities allege that Parker not only set up a profile and contact page on Backpage.com for a 16-year-old girl, a cheerleader as well, but also took her to meet potential clients. On one occasion, the younger girl allegedly had oral sex with a customer and gave the money she made — $60 — to Parker. Parker is also accused of taking the teen to see another man on another occasion but nothing occurred when the teen refused to have sex with the man, instead offering only oral sex which was declined.
The Minneapolis StarTribune reported June 4 that Minnetonka police began investigating a possible case of prostitution when the mother of the 16-year-old called them to lodge a complaint. Having noticed changes in her daughter’s attitude and seeing suggestive text messages on her daughter’s cellphone, the mother had become alarmed. Following up, police soon learned that a 16-year-old cheerleader had mentioned to her teammates that she was trying to make some money.
Authorities say that Parker then contacted the younger girl via Facebook, got her phone number, then texted her to ask if she was willing to have sex for money. Her teammate, who is cognitively impaired, said she was willing to have oral sex but not intercourse. So Parker instructed the teen to supply her with photos that were “not too nasty but kind of cute.” Parker then set up a profile on Backpage.com, supplying her own phone number as a contact number.
Parker is alleged to have taken the younger girl to a customer’s house directly from Hopkins High School on March 5. There, the younger cheerleader allegedly performed oral sex and received $60, which she handed over to Parker. The older girl deposited the money into her personal bank account.
The following day, Montia Parker allegedly impersonated the younger girl’s mother to get her excused from school and drove her to another prospective customer’s house. Here, she was instructed to have sex with the man, but she refused. When she said she would have oral sex only, the man refused. Parker drove the girl back to Hopkins High School
Minnetonka Police said they traced the Backpage.com ad to Parker, who admitted that she had set the profile up for the younger cheerleader. She also told them that there had been a lot of calls regarding the ad.
Police chief Mark Racquet said he’d never heard of the website being used to prostitute a student before. He noted that it was “highly unusual.”
Fox News reported that the FBI also met with the mother and victim in March.
Minneapolis Lt. Kim Lund, president of the Minnesota Juvenile Officers’ Association, told Fox News that authorities have noticed more cases within the last five years involving teen girls using Backpage.com. Echoing Racquet’s comment, Lund said that it was unusual to have a case involving a teen prostituting a fellow teen. Most cases of human trafficking see adult men or women simply contacting teens.
Montia Maire Parker faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted and could be assessed a $50,000 fine.
Even though school end’s this week at the Minnesota high school, Parker was permanently removed from the Hopkins High School campus.
