Miracle-Gro is out to prove that anyone can be a gardener, and the 2013 Rose Parade float “Everyone Grows!” was an invitation to give it a try. An assembly line of potters, gear turners, and unloaders on the “Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster machine” made it seem easy to turn a seed into a rose. For step-by-step photos, take a look at the slideshow attached to this article.
The use of “kid power” and hydraulics for much of the animation brought home the Crown City Innovation Trophy for “Best Use of Imagination & Innovation To Advance The Art Of Float Design.” As an extra treat, 2012 Rose Queen Drew Washington graced the float.
Surrounding the greenhouse were planters overflowing with shrubs and fresh-cut flowers, topiary and trees set into banks of colorful roses. A playful pup and curious kitten added a bit of whimsy.
The wood frame of the greenhouse was created with lettuce seed and the wonderful machine was covered in coconut flakes, yellow strawflower petals and black seaweed. Terra cotta pots used walnut shell and paprika spice, and silverleaf protea leaves were used for the watering can. Butterflies of purple and hot pink sinuata statice fluttered in trees created with more than 10,000 orchids.
Miracle-Gro said, “The central greenhouse symbolizes the transformative power of gardening and plants to unite families and communities. In harmony with nature, many of the flowers, leaves, mulch and other appropriate materials used on this moveable green space will be recovered and recycled into Miracle-Gro soils, keeping green waste out of landfills.”
