New York-based power rock quartet, Morning Fuzz, releases their debut, full-length album today. The new album, Chasing Ghosts, was produced by Barrett Jones (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) and recorded at the Laundry Room Studio in Seattle. The band was formed in 2009 by front man and guitarist Frank Fussa and bassist Christopher Johanidesz. The two are childhood friends who have made music together from a young age. In a recent interview with Fussa, he talked about his start in music, the band and the new album.
As far back as he can remember, music has always been a large part of Fussa’s life. He grew up listening to music with his parents. He first learned about Elvis through his mom and hearing the likes of Billy Joel and The Beatles in the car with his dad. He and Johanidesz also explored music on their own. “We got into skateboarding and punk rock music. We were really into the bands of the ‘90s like Nirvana,” Fussa said. They were even writing their own songs as a kid. “When I was 10 or 11, we were trying to figure out Nirvana songs. Chris was only 5 years old at the time,” he explained, “I wrote out how to play the songs and we never stopped…it was constant music.”
Morning Fuzz has a sound that’s sure to please rock fans everywhere. Fussa describes it as “alternative rock and roll with vocal harmonies…it’s alternative rock meets punk rock,” he explained. The band’s sound is all its own, with influences from several different genres of music. The band had some help from renowned producer Jones, who has worked with some of the most iconic bands of our time such as Foo Fighters and Nirvana. “He has such great ideas and he puts his twist on things,” Fussa said of Jones.
In June of last year, Morning Fuzz found themselves with a solid group of band members. Within four months, they were putting songs together and rehearsing, with some of the rehearsals being ten hours long and even longer on some days. “Pressure motivates me,” Fussa said of their long rehearsals. “I felt great chemistry within the band and knew it was time to record.”
Fussa does the majority of the songwriting. When it comes to the inspiration behind the lyrics, it can come from all kinds of life experiences. “The inspiration comes from whatever is going on at the time…everyday life. Sometimes it comes from insomnia when I can’t sleep or when watching a movie. It can also be about anger or being upset about something,” he said.
Morning Fuzz has seen an exciting few weeks. For instance, the first single off the album, “You Say,” debuted last week and the music video can be seen HERE. They also recently appeared on The Artie Lange Show. There is much more to come from this talented band in the near future.
