Cara is a forensic psychiatrist who is prompted by her father to try and debunk the multiple personality disorder of David, who appears to be taking on the personalities of murder victims. As Cara digs into David’s mind, she finds psychological issues that challenge not only her personal beliefs, but the theories on which she has based her professional career.
Julianne Moore (Cara), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (David/Adam/Wesley), Jeffrey DeMunn (Dr. Harding), Frances Conroy (Mrs. Brenburg), Nathan Corddry (Stephen), Brooklynn Proulx (Sammy), Brian Wilson (Virgil), Joyce Feurring (Granny).
6 Souls starts out looking like a psychological thriller before taking a detour into serial murder, crime, the supernatural, and personal drama. The movie picks up some speed and gets more interesting as it moves along with enough twists and turns to hold audience attention. At the same time, it also felt like they started throwing every genre they could find at the screen in an attempt to make the film. The result is a somewhat convoluted film that ends up in an entirely different genre from which it started.
Acting was decent with Moore delivering much better than expected. Meyers did a wonderful job in his role, displaying a wide range of talent. DeMunn was his usual, as was Conroy, both being in type. The remainder of the cast was solid and interesting.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds included good variety and were fairly well done. Effects were solid and supported the film nicely, adding good depth. Dialogue was interesting and entertaining throughout, helping round out the film. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
Overall 6 Souls is a decent, if somewhat genre confused, film that psychologically presents well before wandering off into supernatural brain candy. Those who enjoy intricate plots and psychological thrillers will likely enjoy this the most.
With plenty of violent content, disturbing and terrifying images, save this one for older teens and above.
