Six months ago aliens landed on Earth and destroyed the major cities. Next, they began taking children for unknown reasons. College professor Tom Mason, one of the human survivors, uses his knowledge of military history to help lead an insurgency against the aliens in the hopes of retrieving his son and wife.
Noah Wyle (Tom Mason), Maxim Knight (Matt Mason), Drew Roy (Hal Mason), Moon Bloodgood (Anne), Seychelle Gabriel (Lourdes), Will Patton (Weaver), Sarah Carter (Margaret), Connor Jessup (Ben Mason), Peter Shinkoda (Dai), Colin Cunningham (Pope).
Falling Skies starts off well enough, jumping into the story 6 months after aliens have invaded Earth. There is a pretty steep learning curve for a while as we catch up after which the storyline takes over smoothly. With some action, and some good alien scenes up front, the film moves along well for a while before devolving into more of a souped-up drama than an alien action flick. By the end of season 1 the series is feeling more like a prime-time drama than anything else. We will keep our fingers crossed that season 2 brings back more alien action and fewer tears.
Acting was better than expected with Wyle putting forth a solid effort. Knight, Roy, and Jessup did well in supporting roles. Patton and Cunningham stepped up nicely and brought good variety to the story. Bloodgood, Shinkoda, and the remainder of the supporting cast are enjoyable.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are pretty good while it is also obvious this is a series with a limited budget. Physical action scenes are nicely done, as are special effects. The alien and alien machine CGI are quite realistic and well done. Dialogue is decent though the drama gets heavier as the season evolves. Sound and soundtrack are both good.
Overall Falling Skies season 1 is a decent TV Sci-Fi series though as it shifts more toward drama it will likely lose some viewers. We will keep our fingers crossed that season 2 is a bit more alien focused.
With aliens and violence, this should be fine for teens and above.
Falling Skies is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
