Slevin Kelevra is looking for his missing friend, Nick Fisher. While at Nick’s apartment looking for clues a couple of hired guns show up and mistake him for Nick. Forcing him to take part in the high-profile murder of a crime boss, Slevin realizes just how much trouble Nick is in.
Josh Hartnett (Slevin), Bruce Willis (Mr. Goodkat), Lucy Liu (Lindsey), Morgan Freeman (The Boss), Ben Kingsley (The Rabbi), Michael Rubelfeld (Yitzchok), Stanley Tucci (Brikowski), Kevin Chamberlin (Marty), Dorian Missick (Elvis), Mykelti Williamson (Sloe).
Lucky Number Slevin starts off a bit strangely before switching over to the main storyline which quickly becomes more intricate than expected. The plot takes more than a few twists and turns which mixed with some decent action, keeps things moving along at a pretty good pace. As things come together toward the end the story begins to take on another form that confirms our suspicions while keeping us connected with the film.
Acting was pretty good with Hartnett presenting a wide range nicely. Willis did well but doesn’t seem to be giving up the action hero role without a struggle. Liu added a bit of unusual flavor to the film in an endearing way while Freeman did a nice job for his part. Kingsley also delivered well, as did Tucci.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done and consistent with a bigger budget film. Action scenes were good without dominating the film and provided a realistic flavor. Dialogue was very well done and moved the story along at a good pace with a few laughs. Sound was very good, as was the soundtrack.
Overall Lucky Number Slevin is an engaging crime thriller with enough big names, quality acting, solid story, and good technical work to make this one well worth watching. Crime thriller fans will particularly enjoy this one.
With strong violence, foul language, and some sexuality this should be fine for older teens and above.
