Convinced he caused his wife’s death Ben vows to save the lives of seven people with the planning of his own suicide. But when he meets a woman, Emily, who is about to die from a heart defect and falls in love it looks like his plan may have flaws after all.
Will Smith (Ben), Rosario Dawson (Emily), Woody Harrelson (Ezra), Michael Ealy (Ben’s brother), Barry Pepper (Dan).
I hate to even give a summary of the movie because it gives so much away. Seven Pounds draws interest from the start with some confusing character development and continues through most of the film. About halfway through things get a bit slow when it feels like character development is all the film has but then it quickly starts to all come together. The last part of the film brings complete redemption with an incredible ending. I had heard this was a depressing film and indeed you will probably have a tear in your eye before all is said and done. The emotional conflict between helping others at your own devastating expense is brilliantly displayed through questions of mental stability, grief, and morality.
Acting by everyone in this film was very good. Smith did wonderfully, portraying a man depressed by emotion while trying to look okay socially. Dawson, Harrelson, and Pepper were all great choices for their parts providing wonderful displays of emotion.
Camera work, sets, dialogue and sound were all nicely done and the film obviously had a fair sized budget.
Seven Pounds was a very good romantic drama. Yes, a bit depressing but, who said drama always means a happy ending? The film effectively provokes strong emotions so although they may not be the first choice of emotions, it does the job very well. Put this one toward the top of your Must See list and you won’t be disappointed.
Some disturbing content and fairly sensual love scenes so save this one for teens and above.
Seven Pounds is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
