“Man, we’re as soft as baby sh**!”– Craig Robinson as Himself
What’s good: There are a few hilarious scenes.
What’s not good: The religious angle was an odd fit.
What happened: What you would do if the world was coming to an end? Screaming and running away are probably the first two instincts that come to mind for most of us. ‘This is the End’ takes a comedic look at how a group of friends handle the end of the world.
Seth (Seth Rogen) and Jay (Jay Baruchel) have been best friends since they were little. They both have had huge success, but have handled it in different ways. While Seth enjoys the life of a Hollywood celebrity, Jay chooses to stay out of the limelight. Things haven’t been the same between them for awhile so some quality time together is sure to do the trick. Everything is great until Seth wants to go somewhere else. Seth and Jay have no idea that their strained relationship won’t be the only thing ending tonight.
Big Hollywood star James (James Franco) is throwing a huge party and everyone famous was invited including Craig (Craig Robinson) and Jonah (Jonah Hill). Jay quickly feels alone after what Seth does to him. Absolutely no one likes Danny (Danny McBride). He wasn’t even invited, but somehow managed to find his way in. Wait until you see what torture he puts them through. A tremendous calamity shocks everybody leading to devastating consequences. To make matters worse, something massive threatens to break in and kill them all. The guys must figure out how to save themselves before it’s too late.
‘This is the End’ is a decent comedy with a few truly funny moments. The one scene that comes to mind is the argument over who jerked off to a pornographic magazine. Another is what happens when Emma Watson decides to leave the house. The entire cast play themselves which made it feel like they would be friends in real life. A special nod goes to Danny McBride who actually stole the show. He truly pulls off the role of the bastard you love to hate. This is a really raunchy comedy so beware of dirty jokes, foul language, and lots of drug use. The best cameo in the film belongs to the aforementioned Emma Watson. She proves that a girl can handle herself just fine during the apocalypse. Channing Tatum’s cameo was, well, disturbing to say the least. You definitely won’t see that one coming.
Easily the main issue with ‘This is the End’ is the religious theme attached to it. Discussing a serious biblical story in one scene and having two guys scream at each other about jerking off in the next just didn’t work very well. Pretty much anything that has to do with the bible should generally be left out of a comedy like this. Also, this film comes off as way too corny at times. We get to see a demon’s genitalia in a couple of scenes. The ending is also suspect when a particular boy band performs while everyone dances in unison. Even though there are some laugh out loud moments, unfortunately they are a few and far between. Most of the jokes are more mildly amusing than they are funny. It appears that they had more fun making this movie than we had watching it.
Bottom Line: If you are a huge Seth Rogen fan then ‘This is the End’ is for you; otherwise, save your cash and wait for it to become a rental.
