Germany’s most successful illegal portal for streaming video, Movie2K.to, has disappeared from the web. Many are aware that Movie2K has been down for a few days now, but some do not know the reason why Movie2K is offline. As Torrent Freak said on May 31, there is still no official explanation behind the Movie2K outage. However, a new report from German news outlets sheds more light on the unexpected and unfortunate demise of Movie2K.
A wealth of data from 24,000 online movies, a simple platform to join, one of the 20 most visited websites in Germany – the film portal Movie2K.to was bookmarked on the browsers of many movie enthusiasts. But the streaming site was anything but legal, and the website owners can expect more blows to come from copyright protectors as they cheer at the demise of Movie2K.
Germany’s most successful illegal streaming offering went offline on Tuesday night, shortly after the Dresden prosecutor had ordered a raid on German film piracy. According to the report, a man bearing the name “Hologram” uploaded a purported 120,000 movies not only to Kino.to, but also to Movie2K.
The Dresden prosecutors have been targeting illegal streaming services for some time, and their research led to the end of the famous portal Kino.to in 2011. However, it’s successor, Movie2K, launched and achieved an even greater reach.
Based on new evidence from a report by Golem.de, it is possible that there is a connection with the outage of Movie2K and the arrest of a notorious uploader from the defunct streaming portal, Kino.to. Following the closure of Kino.to, he retained his continuous supply of cinema and movies, and passed the links to the files on Movie2K, said the report.
Furthermore, Movie2k is no longer accessible because the domain name can not be resolved by DNS to an IP address. This affects not only DNS servers in Germany, such as Telekom or Vodafone, but apparently all. Google’s DNS server can not resolve the name also.
Movie2K.to was one of the hundreds of streaming sites and it attracted millions of users. Movie2K gained popularity because it distributed content in a YouTube-like, easy-to-use environment and provide the latest free Hollywood blockbusters and new seasons of series such as “Mad Men” or “Game of Thrones,” which are not legally available. And the users did not need to fear persecution – unlike those who upload the movies.
