Even with the current Tony Award nominated musical “Kinky Boots” or RuPaul‘s Drag TV show bringing new attention to GLBT diversity around the globe, it is not quick enough. Just last week while in NYC hate crimes took place where openly Gay men were beaten in public. These crimes of hate have stunned the GLBT community from NY to Florida and around the globe.
Now the most recent senseless murder of our openly gay drag queen performer Anthony Jerome Lee, aka Wanda from South Beach Miami is bringing the Gay community together, to raise monies for her funeral.
For those who may use the excuse of not understanding diversity, accepting people who are different from themselves, change cannot come quick enough in the U.S.A. Equality with Marriage for all has opened eyes, not just our Nations but for the globe. They are watching the leader of the United Nations. Yes America, they are all watching us closely. These horrific murders do not represent a country who boast true freedom.
“Wanda was the original bad girl of the industry. But to me, one of my closest friends. She called herself “The Mama”, and me “the child”. She did things her way and made no apologies. We spoke, texted, and read each other almost every single day. The fact I will never be able to enjoy that again is the worst part of this tragedy. She will be forever missed, not just in South Beach but in all the cities she frequented, and all the clubs she was thrown out of…” Power Infiniti.
Tampa based world renowned DJ/Performer Power Infiniti has joined with Kurt King owner of Hamburger Mary’s to help raise monies for her funeral. The special event will take place on June 6, 2013. Hambuger Mary’s is located in the historic Ybor city at 1600 E 7th Ave Tampa, FL 33605. Please RSVP at 813-241-6279. www.hamburgermarys.com.
Close friends say Wanda was forty nine years old. The horrific murder took place in Tampa during this Memorial Weekend. Wanda was said to be helping a friend with groceries and cooking. Wanda heard a knock at the door and opened it, where gunmen fired taken her life. The location given was 3900 block of E. Genesee Street. Wanda was shot multiple times.
Famous DJ Tracy Young posted on her facebook “Miss Wanda….No one deserves such violence. No one deserves such hate. Especially You. You always tried to lift everyone’s spirit and make our days brighter, vibrant and Ferosh! I miss you Sobe Wanda RIP.”
As Tony Award nominated drag plays like “The Nance” starring Nathan Lane show us just how far we have come from the 1930’s, today we are stunned as hate crimes take no value in human life. RuPaul may be the most watched TV show that embraces diversity around the globe, but we must teach the value of life to every child now.” BroadwayGlobal.
“As the United States still fights for Marriage Equality for all, let us not forget the drag queens who have shed their lives, demanding awareness to diversity. From the not so long ago Stonewall Riots where drag queens protected themselves by blocking police behind the bar doors with parking meters. Today we must honor those who were not afraid to stand up for what they believed in. Dress as they felt represented their persona. This is truly freedom. Without freedom we would not current plays and musicals like “Kinky Boots“. Theatre Chat.
Don’t let these unknown soldiers of our GLBT community be left without a honorable service. Please support the efforts above from family and friends for performer Anthony Jerome Lee aka Wanda. As Tony Award nominated actor Billy Porter (Lola) sings from “Kinky Boots” “Hold Me In Your Hearts”. Let us as the leaders, friends and family of the LGBT community “Raise You Up” and “Every body say Yeah”!
