The Nashville Sounds (17-36) took three out of four from the Iowa Cubs (24-29), after winning the final game of the series 3-1 on Friday night. Iowa was only able to muster a single run for the second night in a row.
Nashville starter Johnny Hellweg (4-4) held Iowa to one run on five hits and two walks in his seven innings pitched. Iowa’s lone run came in the fifth inning when Dave Sappelt hit a sacrifice fly scoring Logan Watkins who had singled to lead off the inning.
Iowa starter Yoanner Negrin (0-2) gave up three runs in six innings on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Brian Schlitter pitched two scoreless innings for the I-Cubs in relief of Negrin.
Brian Bogusevic had two more hits on Friday night, while reaching base three times. Bogusevic raised his batting average to .367, good for second in the Pacific Coast League behind Albuquerque’s Scott Van Slyke who is now playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bogusevic ranks second in the PCL in on-base percentage, trailing only Van Slyke in that category as well.
Iowa opens a nine day, nine game homestand on Saturday. After a four game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs, AAA affiliate of the Miami Marlins. After a day off on Wednesday, the I-Cubs meet the Round Rock Express for five games in four days. The series includes a split double-header, necessary because of an earlier rainout between the two teams.
