“Rugby is a beastly game played by gentlemen; soccer is a gentleman’s game played by beasts; football is a beastly game played by beasts.” Henry Blaha
“Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence. The extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret of winning.” Dennis Waitley
Obviously, too truly win at anything takes drive and persistence. The sport of Rugby is no different. In addition to drive and persistence; physical strength, agility, a strong camaraderie among teammates and coaches, and a lot of heart, are what’s needed to become champions.
The West Omaha team is the epitome of what a rugby team should be. They are truly gentlemen, with great drive, persistence, humility, and humor. They also have great spirit, intensity, and the strong desire to win. This is why they are the 2013 Champions.
The Nebraska Youth Rugby League Championship was held Saturday, June 8th, at Storz Rugby Complex, 16th and Storz Expressway, in Omaha. The undefeated West Omaha ruled over Sioux Falls, with a win of 30 to 12. This is the second consecutive year that the West Omaha boys have taken home the trophy. If you have ever been to any of their games you would say, “I see why.” One thing is for sure, as the game goes on, West Omaha’s intensity increases; as the team’s intensity increases, so does that of the spectators.
The weather has been less than desirable for every game this year. It seemed that if it wasn’t windy, it was chilly, or raining. Saturday’s weather was no different. With downpours the night before, and rain in the hours leading up to the game, the field was a muddy mess. With this being said, you can imagine how much more difficult the game was to play on a slippery field. However, both teams carried on with great tenacity.
Receiving their medals, in the winner’s circle, West Omaha! Not only did the boys have a smile permanently pasted on their faces, the coaches, and proud families and friends did as well. In unison the parents thanked West Omaha’s coaches, and the coaches thanked the parents in return. Fortunately, the game was over forty minutes before the downpour hit. This was awesome, because everyone was able to get their pictures and videos taken.
Though Sunday’s Recognition Dinner was cancelled, LuAnn and Chuck Schollmeyer (proud parents of the ziggity Josh Schollmeyer) were gracious enough to have a team picnic at their home in honor of West Omaha’s win.
Next weekend, June 14th through 16th, the All-State Tournament will be held just outside of Denver, Colorado. Representing West Omaha in the tournament will be; Josh Schollmeyer and Harco Germishuys, as Captains; teammates, Cole Buckley, Jared Brugmann, Tyler Ballard, Quinten Dawes, Grant Curington, Evan Davis, and Nick Kwasniewski.
Congratulations West Omaha on your Championship! It has been a great year and we look forward to what 2014 will bring. Go West Omaha!
