As much as “Necessary Roughness” season three is nothing like the past two stellar seasons, at least some interesting storylines are playing out in “Bringing the Heat,” which aired July 31.
While Nico (Scott Cohen) is doing some investigation into the fake Children’s Hospital in the Cayman’s and following the trail to a body shop on the USA Network drama, Dani Santino (Callie Thorne) has her hands full with an old patient, Darryl Hutchinson (Jonathan Keltz), the baseball “phenom.”
Hutch, fans might remember, appeared in the season premiere of the drama when Dani helped overcome his fear of flying and failure. But his fears, apparently, needed a lot more than one episode.
With the potential of being drafted to the majors on “Necessary Roughness,” Hutch’s nerves are affecting him in a big way, so much so that he ends up quitting baseball and disappearing. But why? The only thing Dani can think of is that it has something to do with Crabchek, and she needs to find him in order to help her client, someone she refuses to let down after what happened with accountant Carl.
Throughout all this drama, another kind of tension is unfolding between the hapless TK (Mehcad Brooks) and Sheera (Kate Miner). The two just can’t seem to stay away from each other, despite TK inviting over a cheerleader and Sheera later destroying TK’s apartment. There’s no denying there’s something between these two, something more than TK has ever felt or experienced. But Connor has the best advice for TK: make a clean break. So naturally, TK doesn’t listen. Instead, TK and Sheera, a.k.a. She-K, get engaged. (And Dani is sure to have a reaction to that when she finds out).
While TK and Sheera are most definitely entertaining, the real heart of the show continues to be Dani and her unflinching desire to help her clients, even when Connor (John Stamos) forbades her from continuing to help Darryl. “I make the rules,” Connor says, “and if you don’t like them, you know exactly where the door is.” And that she does, because Dani quits.
Of course this isn’t for long on “Necessary Roughness” “Bringing the Heat” — Nico gives Connor advice on how to apologize — and Dani is back and more than determined than ever to find Crabchek.
But she isn’t the only one. The trail Nico followed, by magically getting the books of the body shop owner, is pointing to one Joseph Crabchek as well. The question now is: what’s the connection? Why is Crabchek’s name popping up everywhere? What does he have to do with a baseball superstar?
Plus, as Nico says, the thing Dani values the most is the truth. And she’s about to get the whole truth from Nico himself, but only after their first — and long-time-coming — kiss.
“Necessary Roughness” airs on USA Network Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EDT.
