Clear your TGIF calendar this week, pour yourself a proper Manhattan and sidle your sultry skins down to the Habitat in Kelowna TONGIHT, this Friday, June 21st, or some kittens will scratch our proverbial eyes out!
The feisty NEON KITTEN CABARET is taking over main stage at Kelowna’s hot downtown venue, the Habitat (248 Leon Avenue), and I suggest you take an eyeful of these kittens.
I had a chance to quickly preview the show during a recent dress rehearsal, as it has been a while since I have interacted with burlesque performers in their own lair. I burlesque is a newer concept for you, let me break in down a little bit.
According to Wikipedia, “Burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which, in turn, is derived from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery.
In a more contemporary light, the art of burlesque has become an empowering expression of femininity, where female driven troupes perform a combination of a tasteful striptease, live vocals and choreographed dance. In the age of gender equality and neutral expressions, it is a proud celebration of artistic expression to watch the girl next door build the confidence to don a set of tassles and live out the dream of being every man’s dream, in her own words and movements.
Meeting the girls from the Neon Kitten Cabaret team in broad daylight, they really were the beautiful, shy girls next door, who had perhaps a cheeky twinkle in their eyes. Very in tune with their musical choices, and even more excited to share their custom couture creations with each other. Sisterhood of the Travelling Bustiers?
I always love to watch creativity when it’s at its peak, and nothing says “CREATE” like a gaggle of young girls, bottomless tickle trunks of feathers and satins, and a stunning venue with all the screens, mirrors and riggings they could handle.
Habitat is a welcoming Kelowna venue for the most artistic cats in the business, an amazing playground. It has been a couple years since I stepped into this quietly situated multi-purpose live venue, and I am so inspired to see what a ton of local support can do for their art scene. Last I saw, Habitat was a room, with a small stage, and a couple of makeshift coat-check / bar areas where all ages could gather and see a punk band or take part in an open mic.
The Habitat I walked into this week, was a beautifully appointed, proper special events venue that had warmth and character, while still being completely relevant technically. Up-to-the minute intelligent lighting, rigging for aerial performances and additional sound, 2 massive service bars, designer furniture and a hot professionally engineered sound system that is compatible with anything you can imagine.
The owner and operator of Habitat, Quinn M Best, was completely hands-on with the rehearsing performers, making sure their sounds and visuals and draperies and lighting and props and set pieces were just as they imagined while creating their show. It is so nice to see a venue owner who is just as, if not more passionate about the art being created as the artists themselves. I am absolutely sure this is a huge reason why artists flock to Habitat, to be a part of this artistic collaborative revolution in the Okanagan Valley.
Another powerhouse and driving force behind both Habitat, and the Neon Kitten Burlesque phenomenon, is the purriest of kittens, Miss Dani Lion. Dani is one of the most recognizable and loved musical figures in our community. If only a few years ago, we can remember Dani’s great talent showcased daily serving tables at the Green Room, serenading diners every afternoon. As evolution will have it, she and Quinn are creative geniuses in tandem, weaving art, music and dance into the fabric of Kelowna’s entertainment district every week at Habitat.
I will make sure to elaborate a lot more on the Habitat story, as there are a multitude of amazing shows programmed in the venue in the coming week. No need to spill all the beans today.
I can say this! You would be kicking yourself if you didn’t march your TGIF night crew down to Leon Avenue tonight for a beautiful, sexy evening with the Neon Kittens :). You are in for a treat!!
