Anthony Weiner is at it again! Proving to the world how NOT TO use the web! Here’s a refresher course on Social Media Etiquette from Social Media Strategist to the stars, Kinsey Schofield!
#1. Unfriending Without Explanation – People take unexplained unfriending/unfollowing to heart. Expect to burn a bridge in real life if you choose to unfriend without explanation. Social Media allows for specific settings to hide certain updates and listing options so you can only keep up with the people you care about. Know that if you unfriend or unfollow, you are likely severing ties with that relationship permanently. (AKA: Don’t call them asking for any favors!)
#2. When Not to Selfie – I think we’ve all scrolled through Twitter or Instagram and stopped and thought to ourselves, “Some people just shouldn’t selfie!” If you’re going to embarrass your Mom, your Dad, your children, your goldfish… Think before you tweet! Geraldo Rivera tweeted a salacious selfie with the caption “70 is the new 50!” He woke up the next morning to a text from his 18 year old in all caps saying, “TAKE THAT DOWN!” Geraldo later blamed Tequila! These are the types of photos that can not only embarrass your family, but cost you your job! In the same category… Avoid over selfie-ing!
#3. There’s a new saying, What Happens in Vegas… Stays on Facebook. Although Viral Revenge makes you feel good… It will haunt you and your partner for the rest of your life. Tricia Walsh-Smith aired her dirty laundry on YouTube receiving nearly 4 million hits! She was trying to pressure her husband in to giving her more than what was agreed upon in her original prenup. A Manhattan judge blasted Tricia awarding Philip Smith a divorce and publicly criticizing Tricia’s attempt at manipulating her husband on such a public forum. Although this woman had a semi successful career in the entertainment business prior to this YouTube video… Tricia will forever be associated with the infamy of her online activity!
Whitney Mongiat inadvertently made headlines when her husband, Jim, secretly filmed and uploaded a video to YouTube of Whitney losing it over wanting to spend her weekend at The Lake. This lead to Whitney filing for divorce. Although Whitney’s behavior was questionable in the video, imagine Bing’ing your potential boyfriend, Jim Mongiat, and seeing what he is capable of. Personally, I’d quickly delete my Match profile and change my digits!
#4. Text before you Tag! Women are all very critical of themselves in photos, you’ll often be combing through pictures of an event and the photos that your girl friends love, you despise with a blinding passion because you’re mid sneeze or they snapped on “3” instead of “Cheese!” Have some decency! You don’t know who is going to capture that image and save it to their own phone or hard-drive once it’s uploaded, you can’t get it back! Ask permission before you post and tag!
#5. Be Mindful Of Who You Critique – It is easy and almost fun to be critical online. I’m guilty of most of my bonding with friends being directly related to people and things that we don’t like! …but you might need a job from the person or brand you’ve bashed later! In fact people all over the WORLD are being canned over criticizing their employers online!
Cliff’s Notes Version: If you wouldn’t say it loudly in a church or a library… don’t put it on the internet!
