Nintendo released several new story details regarding Pikmin 3 during this morning’s Nintendo Direct. Instead of Captain Olimar from the previous Pikmin games, players will control Alph, Brittany, and Captain Charlie as they search the mysterious planet for food to save their dying home world. Along the way, they find that the fruit on this planet is quite large, and devise a plan to bring the seeds home with them. Once the seeds have been extracted, the fruit can be turned into juice, which the player characters must drink in order to continue their mission.
Nintendo aims to make this game more accessible than the previous entries in the franchise. Players can now choose to restart a day if they feel they’ve made too many mistakes, and the number of days are not limited as in previous games, allowing for more exploration. However, players will still have to return to their ship before nightfall, as the planet’s nocturnal wildlife is incredibly dangerous.
Pikmin 3 will also feature several control types. By using the gamepad (referred to in-game as the ‘KopPad’), players can view a real-time map. This map shows the placement of Pikmin and characters, and can be scrolled to view other areas of the world. In addition to using the gamepad, players can use the Wii U’s Pro Controller as well as the Wiimote and Nunchuk. Pikmin 3 also supports off TV play, and the gamepad can be used as a monitor when playing with the Wii remote and nunchuk.
Pikmin 3 launches on August 4th for the Nintendo Wii U.
