Each day for many years I have been more than excited to watch the Young and the Restless and could hardly wait to see what would happen next. Josh Griffith and Jill Farren Phelps took over a little less than a year ago now and it got even better. The storylines were juicy and exciting. There were a couple of changes I didn’t like, such as the exit of Jeff Branson’s character, Ronan Malloy, but for the most part, it was going really well. I was sitting on the edge of my seat, enticed to keep watching. As of late, I watch because of my love for the characters, but honestly, I can take it or leave it right now. This show has been nominated for a ton of Emmy Awards this year, but that was for the work of 2012. The cast is very talented, but this year, their storylines have gone from bad, to somewhat good, to please flush the script down the toilet.
It seems to me that the women are all becoming needy and dependent. Poor Sharon (the character, not the actor) has turned into this desperate tramp. I had high hopes for what Josh Griffith had started to do with this character. In interviews it was said that they would make her stronger and more independent. Just as people were starting to respect her again, they knocked her right back down again. She was practically begging Adam to sleep with her. Adam was this powerful Newman man and just wasn’t in love with her. He wanted her around for nothing more than just sex to get back at Chelsea for sleeping with Dylan. He had her role playing. It was trashy. The Young and the Restless went from classy to trashy in 0.05 seconds. As for Sharon, well, she’s once again, ruined. I’m not sure which direction Jill and Josh plan to take Sharon in, but right now, she’s far from being the successful, independent woman we were hoping that she would become.
As for Lauren Fenmore Baldwin, I don’t even know where to begin with this character. Marriages fall apart all the time because of affairs, but I never once ever thought that a woman as strong as Lauren would come crumbling down because of a young and sleazy bartender. Maybe these things happen in Hollywood, but they don’t happen in a small town. Perhaps Josh and Jill are spending a little too much time celebrating the Emmy nominations out on the town in LaLa Land and getting their ideas from Hollywood. Lauren Fenmore Baldwin would never have succumbed to the temptation of Carmine. Even if she were to have an affair, she is the type of woman who calls the shots, not the other way around. She was the cougar in this relationship with Carmine. Some young guy is going to take orders from Lauren Fenmore Baldwin. That’s how she rolls. So again, thanks for ruining Lauren.
Now we’ve come to Avery. Avery came to town as this smart, successful and classy lawyer. She was one of my favorite characters. Although I don’t like that she hooked up with her sister’s ex-husband, I was even willing to turn a blind eye to that detail, as I really liked Avery. But then Dylan came to town. Nick threatened to call of their engagement and almost end their relationship. Avery turned into this needy, whiney child. Nick acted the same way, but that is true to Nick’s character, spoiled little rich kid. But Avery was a powerful woman. And again, Josh knocked this woman down. He made her cry and beg Nick not to end their relationship. The Avery I was picturing prior to these desperate outbursts would have told Nick where to shove his ring if he questioned her intentions.
How about Victoria? I have always loved Victoria. She was another powerful, talented, successful woman. She was her daddy’s girl. And she was tough. But now we have Adam making Victoria look dumb to daddy. Don’t get me wrong, I love this relationship between Adam and Victor, but not at Victoria’s expense. Victoria should have been grateful to Adam many times over again. The more Victoria goes against Adam, the dumber she looks. And she was Victor’s smart child, prior to Adam’s return. Now she is nothing more than an overly whiney brat. She irritates me. Where is her powerful demeanor? Where is her passion for the company, not just for daddy’s attention? Again, the character has changed and I don’t like it.
I could go on for hours like this, dissecting every single character and we’ll notice a pattern. All of the powerful women on the show have turned into hungry for attention crybabies. I’m starting to think that either Josh Griffith’s life is full of super powerful women whom make him feel like he’s a small man or Jill Farren Phelps is the successful woman whom is in serious need of getting … well anyway … Perhaps the two of them are using the show to express their own hidden rage. Whatever the reason, the show is turning into an epic fail. It’s starting to rank right up there with Trailer Park Boys and Jerry Springer. Actually I doubt even Jerry Springer guests take as many paternity tests as the characters of the Young and the Restless.
Who’s feeling this Nick / Summer paternity storyline? Definitely not me! I had hoped Summer was Jack’s kid all along, but not with Saint Nick hiding the results. Nick has been all up in Sharon, Phyllis and Avery’s business for lying or hiding something, meanwhile he’s been hiding this secret for 18 years? It doesn’t add up and it definitely does not make any sense whatsoever. If they wanted to do a paternity storyline involving Kyle and Summers’ relationship, they should have looked to Victor for hiding Nick’s paternity. Nick could have been Jack’s son instead, making Nick and Kyle brothers. Victor hiding paternity results could have been far more believable than Nick.
I have to admit that I like this softer side of Victor Newman. This whole Adam taking a bullet for Victor has changed his character. I agree that this was a huge deal to the daytime drama and it was a much needed wake up call to Victor, but I am surprised at how suddenly and easily the change came. There was no excitement or build up. In fact, even the scene where Adam got shot was so quick and uneventful that I could have yawned right thru it. I’m pretty sure I actually did.
That brings me to how Nikki and Victor’s (FINAL) wedding was suppose to be this spectacular event. I think one of their other weddings was way better than this one. The way things are going with Nikki and her doctor though, I am sensing another Nikki/Victor divorce is on the horizon and of course another round of the Nikki/Victor weddings to come. Hmm, perhaps Victor can marry Chelsea or Avery in the meantime. Ick!
I never liked Adam or Chelsea until the two of them got together. They brought out the best in each other. I really loved getting to know Adam on a deeper level. I thought that there was some potential for him. Again there was no reason or build up leading to their relationship failing. Chelsea lost a baby, Adam turned to help Sharon … hasn’t this somewhat happened with Nick and Sharon … Sure Adam is Victor’s son, and he’s just like his dad, but come on. He was raised by Hope, so there has to be some hope (no pun intended) for him. This whole Chelsea being pregnant with Adam’s baby but passing it off as Dylan’s … it’s been done before. It’s been done a thousand times on a thousand different Soap Opera’s across the world. IT DOESN’T END WELL!! I don’t care if there are different twists and turns in this storyline. I’m starting to think I am pregnant because of how nauseous I feel when I watch these scenes.
This crap with Lesley and Tyler needs to stop, too. No offense to the actual actors, but I don’t care for these characters. I don’t care why someone is taking their picture or why they have daddy issues. They are “newbies” to the show and although change is usually a good thing, in this case it is not. There is so much unfinished business with characters from the past that by introducing new characters with these crazy storylines just makes the show sloppy. Why don’t we bring back Ronan Malloy and go backwards from there? Where is Christine? I mean, she is the district attorney now, right? How about Daniel, Lucy, Heather, Daisy and Danny?? Daniel, Lucy and Heather took off to Savannah, but Daniel and Heather have parents in Genoa City. Daisy has mysteriously disappeared and so did that storyline. And why is Danny Romalotti not in town? All of his friends are. Shouldn’t he be back on the show? How about JT, MacKenzie and Brock? Ashley, Olivia, Nate, Malcom … where o where did our old favorites go?
What I want to see on this show is all of my old favorites with their unfinished business return. I want to see the characters with the history and the attachments to the actual show actually have storylines that we can relate to and want to watch. I don’t care about these “new” characters because they aren’t the reason I started watching way back when. They don’t have a history with the show and I don’t know their past. I want the people that I grew up watching. I want to see how their lives have unfolded.
I challenge myself by inviting Josh Griffith to ask me to submit some storyline ideas that won’t make fans of the show thank the creators of PVR during their evening prayers. Honestly PVR has been my best friend these days as I don’t have to watch each and every horrible scene.
Now …I’m off to do something productive. Have a great day everyone and remember, fast forward is a great button on the remote.
