Yes, yes I know, I started with a pun, but headlines just seem to naturally demand bad puns. Sue me. I entered the theatre this morning to watch Louis Leterrier’s magic themed film “Now You See Me”with extremely low expectations. For the most part those expectations were fueled by the slew of previous Hollywood attempts at making movies about magic like “The Incridible Burt Wonderstone” and 1978’s “ Magic “As a theme Hollywood simply hasn’t produced very good films when magic is the subject matter.
However I am happy to report that “ Now You See Me” defied those expectations. In fact it did more than that, ” Now You See Me ” went to work on my expectations just like a spurned lover with a baseball bat goes after her ex’s car in country songs. It wasn’t enough to knock them to the ground this film felt it necessary to continue beating my expectations even after they were on the ground bleeding.
” Now You See Me ” is a tale about four moderately successful magician (or Hypnotist in Woody Harrelson’s case) brought together by a mysterious benefactor to perform a show that will end all shows and launch each of them as an international celebrity. As far as plots go, it does sound a little campy, but Leterrier presents a story that is much more complex than that plot sounds. While the film is filled with plenty of stage performances, magic tricks, excitement and more laser beams and holograms than were in ” Star Trek Into Darkness ” this film offers itself up as con movie that should take a place among the best con movies ever made.
That also explains why I am not going to give you any more of the plot, be sure to avoid your spoiler friends on this film as not knowing where this film is going until the last minute is half the fun.
What I am going to do is tell you some of the reasons you should see this film.
First and foremost it is about magic and we all like magic, right? If you don’t like magic then I believe you have no soul and honestly you might want to see someone about that, maybe it’s correctable?
Secondly the cast shines. Their performances may seem a little familiar by now, after all most of them only do one thing, but each is very good at doing that thing.
Although you won’t note much difference between Eisinberg’s portrayal of the self centered Daniel Atlas (I mean seriously what kind of character names them self after a Titan, vain much?) and Columbus his character in 2009’s ” Zombieland “, it works well in this movie. Likewise he is once again paired well with his partner in crime from ” Zombieland ” Woody Harrelson whose Merritt McKinney is perhaps the most likable of these Magicians turned Robbers. Likewise red headed firecracker Ilsa Fisher’s character reminded me greatly of Gloria Cleary her character from ” Wedding Crashers “. It is almost as if Leterrier has stolen four characters from other people’s movies and placed them into a new story, one which works and the entire group displays good chemistry.
Thirdly and perhaps most importantly for the guys, did I mention that Ilsa Fisher has a sparkly costume clad water escape sequence early in the film? I didn’t. Well what are you waiting for? We all like red headed magician’s assistants, right?
So there you have it, ” Now You See Me “ is 1 part magic, 1 part red headed goodness and 1 part awesome. Go see it as soon as you can.
