New York has been liberal as long as anyone can remember. Because of that New York has high taxes, a high cost of living, too many regulations to count, and a state government with a record 32 scandals in seven years. That could also explain the exodus of taxpayers to other states, enough to cause New York to lose ten congressional seats in 20 years. Without the ability to print money like the Federal Government a smaller tax base will spell a Detroit size disaster.
Well thank mother earth that Obama has heard the cries from Albany. As part of the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013 Andrew Cuomo now has 40 million to spend to try to mitigate the effects of years of liberal policies. Our Governor is running ads called “New York State, open for business”. Like any really worthwhile liberal program it has gone a tiny bit over budget. To cover the additional one hundred million needed Cuomo just dipped into the excess funds lying around at New York State Energy Research and Development, The Dormitory Authority and the New York State Power Authority.
The naïve among you might be thinking that money was for Hurricane Sandy. The aid Cuomo himself said New York needed $41.9 billion after a careful accounting of the damages. (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/push-42b-federal-aid-pols-sandy-worse-katrina-article-1.1208522) This would have been the bulk of the $59.7 billion finally approved by appropriations and the bill, almost as much as sequester cut. Semantics aside disaster relief is disaster relief and no crisis should go to waste.
So is this disaster relief going to do anything for the people of the South shore of Long Island who got hit so hard? Of course not, it will go to Jay-Z and Robert De Niro to help their careers so they can continue to support liberals. It will go to CNN, CNBC and NBC to help with their disaster of ratings and in turn give Cuomo good press.
There is no question New Yorkers need relief from the disaster of liberal government. But will spending 140 million tax dollars to convince people without a clue to open a business in the most heavily taxed over regulated state in the nation an efficient use of resources? It is easy to understand Cuomo’s desire to get more people to pull the cart he and his friends are riding on but why are half the ads running inside New York?
We can be sure that tens of people watching that ad will say hey I’m not pulling my fair share here in my low tax state lets pull up roots and move to New York. It could just be Cuomo doesn’t understand that the whole country is not as dumb as the majority of New Yawkers that elected him.
