Shortly after giving birth, neglected and heart-worm positive Blue and her eight newborn puppies were abandoned in Oklahoma during the summer of 2012. After being rescued by the Animal Care League and nursed to health, each of the dogs were placed in loving homes. In honor of the puppies’ first birthday, a reunion birthday party was held June 30, 2013 at the Maple Park Dog Park. Blue and seven of her puppies along with their adopted families attended the heartfelt event.
With the cooperation of the Oak Park Park District, the dog park was closed to the public to allow Blue, her puppies, and their adopted families to celebrate and reunite without outside distraction. A notice was sent out explaining this temporary closure of the park to the public, but everyone was welcomed to come out and view the festivities from outside the park.
A crowd of dog lovers and dog park permit holders camped out along the edges of the park laughing and cheering for the birthday pups. Oak Park resident and dog park user Gabriela, brought dogs Sunny & Ginger to view the party from the fence line. When asked her thoughts on the party, Gabriela responded “I think this is just great, I love it!” This also seemed to be the opinion of many other spectators, who giggled, laughed, and shrieked with joy as the blissful dog siblings and mom interacted with each other.
During this hour long party, the dog park was decorated with banners & skirted tables, dog snacks and treats were abundant, and a specialty dog cake was even served. Of course there were metallic cone birthday hats put on each dog as well- but most didn’t last too long. Photos of the dogs in birthday hats and eating cake are available in the slideshow.
