The Daily Caller reported on Wednesday that Project Veritas – an activist group which recently monitored governmental activities – sent undercover persons to corporate distributors of free cell phones – often referred to as Obama phones due to President Barack Obama’s huge expansion of the program and his publicizing of the program during his presidency.
The Obama Phone (Video)
The actual governmental program is a Federal Communications Commission’s “Lifeline” program designed to give Americans who receive low income a land line or a cell phone. The phone is to be used for making calls to line up job interviews and for emergency contacts, primarily for children of single parents. In 2012, under President Obama, the program expanded to the point that it became a $2.19 billion program. The program is financed by extra charges put on phones of persons who pay for their phones in the United States.
The undercover operation involved video recordings made last month of an activist openly stating that he wanted to have a free government phone to sell for drug money. Other undercover activists posed as persons saying they would sell the phone to buy shoes and handbags, pay their bills, or simply use the money for spending cash. In other words, people can openly admitted that they weren’t using the phone for its intended purpose of being a “life line” when needed in emergencies, but using the money for even illegal transactions.
The two phone companies caught on video giving phones out, regardless of the ludicrous reasons the actors said they would use the money for, were reported to be TerraCom Wireless and Stand Up Wireless.
To get an Obama phone, it is reported that most persons show an Electronic Benefits Transfer card as a form of proving their eligibility for welfare payments to a phone provider. Persons can also prove their eligibility by showing their tax statements to a phone provider.
Most shocking of the undercover investigation is when an actor entered a Stand Up Wireless facility in Philadelphia and told the phone dealer that he intended to sell the phone to buy drugs. One exchange involved the actor asking the phone store employee if he can sell it. When the employee informed the actor that he can do whatever he wants to do with the phone, the actor blatantly said he was going to get some money for heroin with his phone. The employee simply responded, “Hey, I don’t judge.”
A Chicagoan admitted that he had three Obama phones. For the record, that’s exactly what he called his three phones – Obama phones. He said one is activated on the first of the month, another on the fifteenth of the month, and a third on the twenty-second of the month. He went on to explain that each phone gets 250 minutes for a total of 750 free phone minutes per month. When his claims were doubted, he pulled a phone out of each of his pants pockets and said, “The third one’s at home – out of minutes.” Incidentally, in conversation he also said that he’s on disability and therefore isn’t looking for work. Additionally, he said has no children living with him. Therefore, he doesn’t need a phone – let alone three phones – for the intended purposes of finding a job or for a child’s emergencies.
