Off Grid is a new magazine from the creators of Recoil. It will focus on preparation, survival, mobility, defense, medical and gear. It is simple enough to read for the beginner and yet interesting and focused enough for the established Prepper.
The how-to articles, enhanced by step by step photographs, are easy to follow along. For example in the first issue covers three different knots. The step-by-step illustrations are simple enough to follow. The specific uses for each individual knot are also included, making it simple for the beginner to know which not to use for which purpose.
Articles ranged from communication to how to to selecting the appropriate backpacks firearms and to water management plan, to name a few. Each of the articles were enhanced with illustrations and include a “tidbit” section. For example in the communications article, the tidbit addressed ham radio slang. The articles were consistently informative and fresh.
The articles take a fresh look at familiar subjects as well. For instance many an article has been written on quality backpacks. Normally the article talks about the backpack strengths are the pros cons that much cost dimensions and they review the backpack itself. Off Grid takes it one step further and talks about choosing the correct backpack to fit you personal and more specifically talks about how to choose the backpack that would fit you most effectively. The review then covers eight backpacks. Each review averages five photographs or illustrations.
Another article compares MREs. A MRE is a meal ready to eat. Author Gordon Meehl discusses the importance of the MRE. He talks about the caloric intake and the menu. He also covers where to find them for the average civilian. His article leads into another by John Teator titled ”Freeze Dried Eats.” The article discusses alternatives to MREs. The reviews in his article were fresh and honest.
Weapons are a common topic of peppers. Not only will be at some point in time most likely have to defend ourselves against someone or something, but some weapons can be years as a tool as well personal defense is one item that every SH TF plan should include.
All in all, the articles are straightforward, easy to read, insightful and informative. Illustrations are helpful, simple to understand and they enhance the articles nicely. As more and more people come to realize the need to be prepared for any and all threats, magazines like off grid will make the move from a niche market to a general market.
The Summer 2013 is the inaugural issue and is expected to be available on newsstands until 17 September 2013. The single issue price is $8.99. The companion website will be www.offgridweb.com; however, it is simply a static page at the time of this writing. It is published by Source Interlink Media, LLC.
