As far as reality shows go, there are bachelorettes, beauty pageant contestants and housewives.
Now there’s a show about a world class runner.
Debuting tonight on WE tv is a behind scenes look at the life of Sanya Richards-Ross with “Sanya’s Glam & Gold.”
Richards- Ross, a specialist in the 400m and the 4×400 relay, is a two-time Olympian with four Gold medals to her credit.
She also happens to be married to another athlete – two-time Super Bowl Champion Aaron Ross.
The couple met in college at the University of Texas, married in 2010 and now are focused as much on their athletic careers as they are on their busy personal lives.
In each hour-long episode viewers will get a first-hand look inside the world of the athletic power couple, with a special focus on unstoppable track superstar Richards-Ross as she juggles appearances, grows her businesses, expands her career and maintains a loving marriage.
Keeping focus on her athletic goals, Richards-Ross recently revealed to me that she’d like to compete in one more Olympic Games.
“Our window of competition is short so I want to take advantage of that,” says Richards-Ross. “The training is intense for me, but training is definitely a priority.”
While the pull of competition is still ever present for Richards-Ross, she’s realistic about her time on center stage, admitting “I’ve been injured and I wasn’t able to run as much as I wanted, but I know that the fire still burns for me.”
Discussing her post running plans, Richards-Ross has no shortage of options, quickly declaring, “I’d love to do some acting, and I already have my own clothing line.” But the thing that she’s most looking forward to is, “having a family and being a mom.”
Richards-Ross more than adequately sums up her changing perspective with a statement that applies to athletes and non-competitors as well; “Your drive changes as you go through life – the things that you want to dedicate your life to changes as you move through it.”
While the show is not solely focused on Richards-Ross’ training and athletic pursuits, it’s refreshing to see a show about a woman pursuing something other than a husband or a crown.
And, it’s a certainly a boost for those who follow and compete in the track and field industry which generally goes rather unnoticed by the general public, except for during the Olympic Games.
“Sanya’s Glam & Gold” isn’t ground-breaking reality television, but Richards-Ross is a outstanding representative of the running community and the show is certainly worth a look.
“Sanya’s Glam & Gold” airs on WE tv Thursdays at 10pm e/p.
